Thla was decided upon at a meeting
of the executive committee held yee

The meeting of the execntlre oom-
mlttee was called yesterday to pay
some of the political debts of the
' organisation bnt after the bill were

Idea was brought up for discussion,
It had been decided some time ago
that the candidates shonld pledge
themselves to stand by the success
ful nominees but yesterday the
Question came up for further dis
cussion. It was decided that all
' men who come out for office and
'asked the people to vote for them
shonld stand by the voice of their
. party members. It was argued that
a defeated candidate was by duty
'bound to torn about after the pri
maries and, whoop-lt-np for the man
who beat him.
In line with this belief it was or
dered that a pledge be drafted and
prepared for every candidate on the
.Republican ticket to sign. This
draft was prepared and It Is expected
that all .Republican candidates will
;com Into camp within the next few
days and take the pledge.
Failure to sign the pledge required
by the central committee will throw '
.the candidate so neglecting into dan
;er of encountering the opposition
,of the central committee during the
remainder tffHhe-campaign. The

PAID SHERIFF TO SPIRIT
AWAY HER WITNESSES
Three weeks ago Sheriff R. R. Veale,
of Contra Costa county, California, came
to Portland as the paid agent of a
member of that faction of the Bow On
Ton that la held responsible for the
murder of Lee Dal Hoy, the wealthy
Chinese merchant shot down on his .own
doorstep at 27 Pine street four weeks
ago.
Three days ago Sheriff Veale came
to Portland with warrants for the ar
rest of the three witnesses upon whom
the local authorities depend for testi
mony with whloh to oonvlct the two
Chinese now under arrest and charged
with the commission of tne murder or
Lee Dal Hoy.
Sheriff veale admits that ne was pri
vately paid on the occasion of his first
visit; that he accompanied a Chinese
interpreter known as "Jake"; that the
occasion of his visit was business In
connection with the murder of Lee Dai
Hoy; that Jake Is aligned with the fac
tion of the Bow On Tong held respon
sible for the murder; and that at the
time he was not acgng as the chief
peace officer of Contra "Costa county,
California, but as a private citizen
under pay of a faction of a Chinese
society that had already caused the
murder of one wealthy and prominent
Portland Chinese merchant and marked
three others for slaughter.

Sheriff Veale denlea that there la anv
connection between his visit here three
weeks ago and Ms reappearance armed
with warrants for the arrest of the
state's principal witnesses against the
men charred with the murder of Lee
Dal Hoy.
"One of my deputies Will arrive here
tomorrow morning, he said yesterday
"with requisition papers for the three
Chinese who were arrested Thursday
afternoon and later released on an order
from District, Attorney Manning.
VI am going ahead,' continued the
sheriff, "and- use every expedient
know of to get possession of these men
and take them back to California with
me. No, I am not going to employ any
counsel on my own account, out I sup
pose the Chinese society that is Inter
ested in the prosecution of the tbxre
men I am after will have a lawyer on
hand when the matter comes before the
governor. I have reason to believe that
Attorney F. F. Freeman will be on
hand wnen the requisition papers are
preseniea.
Attorney Freeman is the lawyer re-
tainea ty tne friends or the men ao
cusod of the murder of Lee Dal Hoy to
defend mem before the local courts,
The three Chinese for whose arrest
Sheriff Veale holds warrants from the
superior court of Contra Costa county
California, are Chen Hung, one of the
wealthiest merchants In Chinatown, and
Lem YIp and Go Ting Yuen. The two
men last nnmed saw the murderers of
Lee Dal Hoy running away from the
scene of the killing and pointed them
out to the police. Chen Hung has a
complete knowledge of the formation
of the conspiracy to murder and the
dispatch of the murderers from the
headquarters of the Bow on long in
San Francisco. He. with Lee Dal Ho
was among the four Chinese merchants
placed on the death list when the mur

Isatlon that ordered the killing of the
Portland Chinese. The charge Is ob
taining moncv by false pretenses.
The crime is alleged to have been
committed at the little station of Giant,
in Contra Costa county. In May, 1906.
The local authorities have abundant
proof that on the date mentioned ail of
the men accused were in this city and
therefore could not have committed any
offense against the laws In Oiant or
any other town in California.
The attempt to get possession of the
state's witnesses In the murder case
and take them to another state on what
aDDeare to be a trumped-up charge is
so aDDarent that it Is extremely unlike
lv that Sheriff Veale will have other
company than that of his deputy when
he returns t' his official duties in his
home county. Governor Chamberlain
has been apprised of the situation and
when the sheriff presents his requisi
tion papers special counsel win be on
hand to suDDlement the district attor
neys office In fighting the issuance of
requisition warrants.
