Paris, April 1. An American girl it
th talk of Paris. By ber eccentricities
,and xtravsganc she has literally dai
sied the cynical city. Miss Peggy Gil
lespie, though introduced under high
auspices le New York society, did not
achieve success until she came to Parii.
Moreover, she ha . appeared on the stacs
of be native city, Pittsburg, where she
was one the wife of Oeorge Maclelland,
without securing any astonishing eclat.
In Paris Miss Gillespie has absolute
ly revolutionised the style of women's
dreas by introducing the sleeveless
gown, Greek tunics and flowing draper
lea on antique llnea. The Gillespie fash
ions are so radical that they have come
on slowly here as they are also In
London and nnv Within two weeks
scores of . American dressmakers and
buyers will sail for New York, carrying
the Gillespie model.
Miss Perrv la lithe snd thin, with a
pretty, Imoertlnent face and breesy

in Paris she attracted the attention of
Henri L.ettelller, son of the proprietor
of the lead In a- Paris newspaper, Le

London, April J.The author of the
famous "War of the Future." the late
Jean ds Blach, Insisted that an upris
ing; of the socialistic proletariat would
bring; the next great world-war to an
inconclusive close. A book is published
here which adopts that opinion, and Is
Interesting- In yet another sense because
it Illustrates the growing disillusion
ment of England with the too obtrusive
success of her ally, Japan.
"The World's Awakening" purports to
be a scientific military novel. It de
scribes a War which breaks out in 1820
between England and Japan, and soon
Involves France, Germany and the
United States. The anonvmoua anihnr
explains that the Ana-lo-Japanese alll-
ance was not renewed In 1915 mainly
owing to the opposition of Australia,
wnicn nates and dreads Japan, and
threatens to "cut the nalntr" unl.
the alliance is at once dissolved.
It is Australia that hrln firs (in 1

fleet. Port Arthur fashion.
Japan scores everywhere. Hh inrite ,
Hindus to revolt, and intrigues an in-'
surrectlon in Cairo. A rebellion against
American rule breaks out In the Phllin-
pines, which proves to be the result of
a Japanese plot. Japan soon shows her
hand, lands troops, defeats an American
force and makes no concealment nf her
determination to seize the Islands and
keep them.
Germany and France meantime come
to blows, and Germany is discomfited.
America declares that she will Drose-
cute hostilities with Japan at all costs,
and will under no circumstances sur
render the Philippines. The war con
tinues indecisively.
But the proletariat of the world
knows no indecision. The proletariat J
has decided that the war shall not oon-
! tlnue. Anti-war strikes and riots begin I
in England, and make it imnosslhln to !
continue the fight. Russia and Italy
oner to Intervene, and the war comes
to a sudden end with an appeal to The
Hague tribunal.
"The World's Awakening" Is onlv one
or many nooKs on ruture wars which
have appeared in England during the
past few years. But It is very signifi
cant that its author selects Japan as
the great enemy of the world's Deace.
No Englishman who wanted a sale for
his book would have made suah a
choice even a year ago. It is still more
significant that the Armageddon should
be ended by a peace-loving proletariat
on the lines laid down br De Bloch.
