Mayor Lane has vetoed another ordin
ance granting a private Individual per
mission to use the sidewalks for build

tel has fallen under the veto. At the
last meeting of the council the mem

notei owners the right to extend their
building eight inches over the sidewalk
In certain places where the hotel people
wish to add ornamental decorations to
the present structure. Mayor Lanes
veto message follows:

purposes only.
In respect to this ordinance I would
say that the sidewalk at the nnrthwui
corner of Fifth and Washington streets
Is in the contested district at th it
and every inch of sidewalk surface Is
reaulred ror th umm txf th. trenmT-i n.,K

authorized by this ordinance, amounts
to a transfer of the property of the
public to private use without any ade
quate compensation to the people, and
is unjust and should not be allowed for
purposes ornamental or otherwise.
