the Philippine constabulary, who ar

six months' furlough after a two
years' residence in the islands.
William was one of the best known
athletes in the northwest up to three
year ago, and holds the record for tha
440 yard dash, which h negotiated In
the fast time of 60 3-5 seconds In 1906.
Critics who have seen Williams run are
confident that he could have gone the
distance in less than 49 seconas on a
curved track had he been pushed. He
was a sturdy runner, and when in good

change. They have also been dubbed
the Webfooters, but this is Inelegant
It would be a good scheme if some one
at Portland offered a Drize to the fans
suggesting the most appropriate uue.
Tbe Bulletin ma this several years ago,
hence the name, the Seals. It was left
to a committee consisting of Bill Lange,
Danny Long and Judge Thomas Gra
ham to pick the most appropriate name,
and . this committee made an excellent
aelectlon. The Seal Rocks at the Cliff
House are famous the world over, and it
was a happy selection of the committee
to dub. the San Francisco club the Seals.

that Jockey C. H. Schilling 1 the com
ing boy. He it 1 who threaten Miller,
and not Dugan or Gilbert. Good judge
who had seen Schilling and Gilbert dur
Ing tha past month at Arcadia and Oak
land, respectively, declare Schilling to
be a stronger nnisher and a much bet
ter Judge or rate and distance than Gil
bert. Be that aa it may. Schilling is
actually leading Miller in the riding
averages at the present time.
Miller has every chance to do well
too, for his mounts have been specially
selected by Dr. Rowell, his manager, the
trainer of president "Tom" Williams'
string.

work nas been nign-ciass is putting it
