Annexation is the paramount issue In
the Mount Scott district With the end
In view of securing Ball Run water, the
residents of the Mount Scott district.
Including Woodstock on the west. Wood
mere on the east, a district four miles
square, are petitioning for annexation
to be effected at the general election in
June.
The Mount Mcott Annexation club has
been formed among soma of the leading
cltliena of the district, and meetings
are held In different parts of the dis
trict every few weeks. Dr. William
DeVeny, Whitney Boise, K. 8. J. Mc
Allister and other east aide olUsens
have spoken to the property owners of
the district at these meetings. After
the principal addresses have been made
It Is the custom to throw the Question
open to the house, and a general dis
cussion ensues. A vote Is also usually
taken to determine how the sentiment
stands.
Sentiments Are Fronooaoed.
At one time the feeling over annexa
tion was bitter between those who op
posed the step and those who were cir
culating petitions. This feeling has to
a great degree subsided, due to the ap
proach of election and the number of
other political question that confront
the people. Property owners are much
concerned In the annexation question
yet. however, though the annexationists
reel tnat they nave the majority on
their side and that they will succeed In
annexing the district to Portland In
June.
Petitions have been circulated In
every part of the district, and a great
many more names have been secured
than is necessary. After the next meet
ing of the annexation club, to be held
Friday, Aprl J. the petitions will be
presented to the rlty council, which
body will be required to pass upon the
measure before It can be placed on the
ballot at the general election. Special
attractions are billed for the meeting
at Woodmere next Friday that will
close the campaign for annexation, and
a large attendance Is expected.
trong Improvement Association.
A great deal of good has been ac
complished by the Mount Scott Im-
Srovement association that has been
urlng the winter one of the strongest
of the great many civic bodies on the
east side. Its great work has been the
agitation for the Improvement of the
car service In the Mount Scott district.
The car service between East Forty
eighth street and Lents was for months
notoriously the worst In the city. The
fight for better service cemented the
Interests of the people of Mount Scott
and the result was the formation of a
strong push club.
Ed T. Naghel has been the leading
spirit In the club, and as president has
guided It safely through many stormy
days. The annexation question nearly
disrupted the body completely, but by
judicial handling- the club has avoided
a position directly one way or the
other on the question whether Mount
Scott should be annexed to Portland.
That has been taken up by another or-
Sanitation in the dlstriot known as the
ount Scott Annexation club.
The Mount Scott association is also
endeavoring at this time to raise suffi
cient funds with which to buy a chem
ical engine for fire protection. Should
the volunteer company In Mount Scott
acquire this chemical It will be the best
equipped volunteer company In Oregon,
and perhaps on the Paclflo coast The
chemical which It Is proposed to buy
will cost 1800. nearly all of which sum
Is about subscribed. Meetings are held
every Monday evening In the Kern Park
drug store at Kern Park.
