' In the parlora of tha Imperial hotel to
Mra. Lischen Millar of Kugene, a charter
member or tha club. About 60 gueata
were present, who listened So a mualcal
program. One of the features of tha
evening was tha contralto solo, "Oh,
l'romlse Me," sung by Miss Roslna Mmo
- lntnsh, accompanied by Weber's string
orchestra. The recitations by O. Lester
Paul "Tne mot's Story" (by request)
and "Despair." by Thomas Dally Aldrlch.
were much enjoyed, ' as was also the
music by Misses Hoben and Jr. Kmii
Knna. During the evening Webber'a
stringed orchestra gave several charm
Inn' numbers. In the receiving line were
Mrs. Lucia Faxon Addlton, Mrs. Emma
Sickle Marshall. Mrs. Lischen Miller.
Mrs. Bessie Oulnean Stone, Mrs. June
McMillan Ordway and Ml us Frances Got
ahitll. During tha evening refreshments
were served.
Mrs. A. Parish, who conducts a room
lng-huuse at 211 Park street, applied to
the chief of police for protection against
a man who, she says, threatens to
wreck her house. She sayg she employed

agreeing to Day him 11.50 for his labor.
When the work was dona she found she
had but tl In change. Thla she gave
tne man, telling him to coma around in
the morning rfor the balance due iiltn.
He did aa she requested, but Instead of
asking for 60 cents demanded IS. When
thia demand waa refused the man threat
ened to return and wreck the house.
Mrs. Parish was assured that If the man
attempted to carry out his threat he
would be placed under arrest and prop
erly punished.
A black aloucb hat is tha aourenlr
leff by a burglar last night at the
home of Mrs. . Fred Henderson In Ar
ista. He entered the kltohen about 8:10
o'clock, heavily masked, but Mrs. Hen
derson, Instead of fainting, called to a
neighbor who was sitting In the next
room to "bring the gun." That was
enough for the burglar, who fled,
knocking off his hat by running against
the fence. Sheriff Stevens and Deputies
Bulger and Leonard went to work on
tha case and took possession of the hat,
but have made no arrests. The man Is
described as about 25 years old, tall,
dark complexion, wearing a light gray
suit.
Edward P. Solomon, a well-known
young business roan od brother-in-law
of Big Slchel. died at the Good Samari
tan hospital at 6 o'clock this morning
from an attack of mastoiditis. Mr.
Holojnon had been sick for some time
and last Tuesday waa operated on, but
was unable to withstand the ravages of
the disease. He was 87. years old and
had been a resident of Oregon for 30
years. He waa connected with J. R.
Howies & Co. In the manufacture of
Iron and steel. The funeral will take
place Sunday morning from the family
residence at T60 Irving street.

At a special meeting of the city
water board yesterday afternoon bids
ere opened for a reservoir on Portland
Heights and the lowest was found to be
from Qleblsch & Joplin, for $8,933. Four
other bids were received and all were
referred to D. IX Clarke, engineer of the
board. The reservoir Is to have a ca
pacity of 600,000 gallons and Is to be of
concrete construction. It will be lo
cated about one half mile south of the
transfer point of the Portland Heights
and Council Crest car lines.
Tha Oregon and Washington division
of the Travelers' Protective association
will meet at tha Portland hotel at 8
o'clock tomorrow evening. The busi
ness of the evening will include the
election of a trustee to succeed the late
K. M. Brannlrk and the selection of del
egates to represent this division at the
national convention of the T. P. A. at
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in June. This
will be the first quarterly meeting of
the year.
Tho management of Sargent's hotel
says that K- Sumada, a Japanese who
wan Indicted by the federal grand Jury
on a charge of Importing alien women
from Japun for Immoral purposes, never
worked at the hotel. Sumada made a
wtatenient o tho assistant district at
torney that ho was a cook and formerly
worked at Sargent's. Sumada appeared
In the United States court this morning
and entered a plea of not guilty.
'A fare and a third has been granted
by the O. R. & N. company for dedica
tion cf the new Roman Catholic cathe
dral at Baker City April 9, and for tha
state convention of the Toung Women's
Christian association at Eugene April 3
to 6. The Eugene event will have rates
from all points an Southern Pacific and
U. K. & N. lines in Oregon.

Judge O'Pay In the circuit court this
morning overruled the motion for a new
trial In the damage case of Anton K.
Holmes against the Eastern and West
ern Lumber company. Holmes recov
ered a Judgment for 17,600 for Injuries
received while in the employ of the
company. The company Is expected to
appeal to the supreme court.

Chief of Police Grltzmacher this
morning received a dispatch from Alton,
Illinois, signed "John Berner Sr.," In
which It is stated that a man named
Robert Sennett had died there and that
his aaughter, whose name Is unknown.
Is supposed to be living In this city. A
request Is made that the local authori
ties assist In locating the woman.
The automobile commission will hold
a meeting thia afternoon t the city
hall, where 18 chauffeurs will take an
examination. License cards are ready
for those who passed the examination
last week and badges will arrive next
week, when they will be -distributed
among the successful candidates.

Calvary Presbyterian church, has re
turned from the east and will occupy
hla pulpit-next Sunday. Much lntereat
attaches to Dr. Ely's movements at thla
time as during hla trip east he has been
extended a call from three eastern
churohes. The Presbyterian church at
Beatrice, Nebraska, one at Detroit, and
Westminster Presbyterian church at
Cedar Rapids has ai; urged him to ac
cept their pulpits. Dr. Ely has not
yet' made an announcement as to a is

"Clnderel" Is the title of the nautical
playlet which will be the headline at
traction at the Grand next week. It is
to be played by Maude Sutton & Co.
"The Ballet Girl" and several other big
