tained in the Harbor.
Two aalllnaSresaela are heln ilntalneil
in the harbor because of trouble over
sailors. Both are laden with wheat and
ready in all other respects to start out
on the long run to the United Kingdom.
They are the British ship Arctic Stream
and the German ahlp Nereus.
i ne Arctic stream is being held up by
the immigration officials because Sec
ond Mate H. Croach is violently Insane
at the Salem asylum. The Immigration
officials demand that Captain Dixon de
posit enough money here to cover tha
expense of having the man deported to
hi home in Europe in care of a guard.
Captain Dixon hesitates paying the
money the amount being several hun
dred dollars, on the ground that the
mate was not Insane wnen he was paid
off. He says he let him go because he
was Incompetent.
The Nereus Is held up by two causes.
In the first place two sailors. Smith
and MacKensle, who signed on her the
other day, have been spirited away from
the windjammer in some mysterious
manner, and In the second place one of
ine saiiors wno came nere witn tne ves
sel from Valparaiso, got away In vio
lation of the Immigration law. He had
been at the hospital till a few days ago
and on the way to the shin made his
escape. The Immigration officials hold
that in order to remain here the young
man must be possessed of $50. whereas
he only has $26. They are trying to lo
cate him this afternoon.
The two Bailors who have disappeared
so mysteriously, were signed ; on by
Captain Muller without aid of the local
snllor boarding-house masters, Captain
Muller having decided to save the ex
