As a result of injuries received by
falling from a railroad trestle near La
Center, Washington, a few days ago,
Jamea Mcintosh, a loiterer, died at Good
Samaritan hnaDlts.1 n 6 o'clock yester
day afternoon. The man was brought
to the city two days ago for treatment,
neither ha or his friends believing his
injuries to be of a serious nature. Very
little Is known of Mcintosh here be
yond the fact that he has a considerable
sum of money on deposit in local
bank. The body Is In charge of the
coroner and will be held pending a de
cision of his friends or relatives aa to
Its disposition. ,
Central W. C. T. U. met Wednesday
aftenoon. Mrs. Kockwood spoke on the
work of the city library. She spoke or
the children's room and the effort to
lead them to read the best books, and
referred to the work In the county.
There are five reading rooms and sev

spoke on the Union Signal, the organ or

Councilman Baker introduced an ordi
nance at yesterday's council meeting to
nmhihit hiwinrn and vendors from op-
ratinor in tha downtown district. The,
reason given for introducing the ordi
nance Is that the vendors line the city
streets and force merchants paying
large rents Into competition with them.
Another reason Is that the streets are
littered with the refuse from such
stands. Councllmen Beldlng and Drls-
coll announced they would oppose tne
measure when it comes up ror passaae.
The ordinance was referred to tne
license committee.

Noonday Meal Interrupted.
Boarders at the Vallamont boarding
house, West Park and Yamhill streets,
had their noonday meal interrupted by
the cries of "Fire!" today. When the
fire department arrived the basement
was filled with smoke. There was no
damage. Some loose papers In the base
ment had caught fire, presumably from
the furnace, and a slight blaze resulted.
