Since disposing of Honey Mellody via
the knockout route a few months agj,
Frank Mantell has met and beaten a
number of fairly good men. Ho did
most of his fighting around Philadel
phia, figuring in six-round, no-decision
bouts. Before coming to San Fran
cisco, Mantell outpointed Jack Williams,
Eddie Haney and Jack Robinson, heavy
weights, in the Quaker City within a
month's time. He also won a decision
over Mickey Hyde in six rounds and
knocked out Jack Rogers and Andy Mal
loy In eight rounds each, near Boston.
Mantefi's big setback was a knockout
at the hands of Harry Lewis, who put
him away In three rounds. He boxed a
20-round draw with Rube Smith in
Denver some months ago.
Mantell has been fighting for about
two years. He learned the game in
Providence, Rhone Island, his home
town. He can fight at any weight from
148 to 164 pounds. His only California
appearance was against Kid Farmer at
Maryavllle two weeks ago. He gav;
Farmer a terrible beating in 20 rounds.
Mantell has never figured as a head
liner, but he is a big, clever fellow who
firomises to come to the front like a
ot mora If given a chance. He was.
matched to flgnt Ketchel at coima
during the latter part of this month
but the match was called off at Ketch
el's reauest.
Since Mellody, who seemed to have
the best hold on the title, waa knocked
out in 15 rounds on November 1. 1907
In Dayton. Ohio, by Lewis, there at
pears to he no real holder of the welter
weight at present. It is claimed by
Jimmy Gardner, Harry Lewis, Mike
(Twin) Sullivan and Jack Blackburn.

Whitman College. Walla . Walla,
Wash., March 26. Manager Marvin has
practically made arrangements for an
extended trip of the Whitman baseball
team Into the Willamette valley during
the Easter vacation.' Although all the
details have not yet been settled it Is
probable that the schedule played will
be as follows, including four intercol
legiate games:
April 13 Willamette university at
Salem.
April 14-16 Two games with Univer
sity of Oregon at Eugene.
April 16 Oregon Agricultural college
at Corvallls.
April 17 Chemawa Indian training
school at Chemawa.
April 18 Multnomah Amateur Ath
letic club at rortland.
It Is likely that a game with a team
at The Dalles will also be played on
the return trip. This will make a
heavy schedule, especially to be played
so early in the season, but it Is 'the only
time an Oregon trio can be arranged and
the boys are very anxious to take it.
Good weather will likely continue from
now on, so that the team will have plen
ty of opportunity to practice. The team
will be especially strong this vear is the
opinion of all who have seen the boys at
practice.
