Officials of the Northern Pacific rail
road have notified tha joekl police de

near Goble, on the Columbia river, as
desperate a gang of hoboes as has ever
made its appearance along tile line of
the roaL The Portland police are
warned that thepe men are liable to
make their way into this city at any
time, and that their advent may be
marked by acts of crime and violence.

freight trains that stop at Goble, steal
coal for. their fires and commit such
other acta of vandalism as suits their

MAKE TEST OF LIVERPOOL FENDER
Mayor Lane has addressed a letter to
B. S. Juaselyn, president of tha Portland
Railway, Light A Power company, call-
in g his attention to tha fact that one of
tha company's cars recently eaused tha
loss of another life, and asks that the
company install a Liverpool fender and
guard upon ona of its earn as an ex
perlment. , ' 3,
While Mayor Lane does not attach the
responsibility , of tha death upon tha
company, he asks that in order to ar
rive at a solution of tha fender question
the company try one of -the Liverpool
design. The mayor explained that this
type of fender is not patented; that It
