THAT clever Madame Georgette,
who sits alone most of the day
dreaming dreams of confections
and perfections yet to be made, says that
she will not make small hats for the spring
season.
"The Parisiennes do not like small
fiats," says she; "and I do not like all
black hats. They arc not chic. The best
bat of the season is the one turned up on
the side, giving the effect of length from
front to back-just the opposite to what
IParis has been wearing."
But the clever little woman is also us
ing big leghorn hats with discs of flowers
for trimming, or straw pompons and
aigrettes.
Monsieur Lewis declares for Louis
XII and Directoire. His greatest success
has been the patachon, which has no ban
deau and rests flatly on the head, the brim
turned up at the side in a piquant angle.
Of course, the crown is high, as is
everything else, and both Lewis and Re
boux foretell a great craze for the ruby
shades this spring; but, while that may be
true, such a hot color surely cannot last
throughout the summer.
Straw trimmings are another feature
cf the season, and the disciples of Audu
bon may: safely rejoice that madame has
. found a ' substitute for the beautiful ai-
Sette,. the fairy feather that pleased mi-dy-so
much, that her desires have cost
winy millions of herons their lives. It is pretty, airy and practical, winie they have .

' ajgretos, most all the birds have been , are comiuned in many cases, such as pea
wiped from the face of the earth, and the cock blue and green, or brown.

cases, very floppy brims as, for in

make.
It is strange that, after all the talk of
the popularity of the toque, only one hat in
the collection shows any leaning toward
close-fitting lines, and this is built very much'
orf the style of, a cap. Another resembles
an English walking hat trimmed with
white wings, and the experts say that the
style is sure to return to popularity. The
Charlotte Corday ruffle with a. picture hat
is both becoming and, attractive and bids
fair to be most fashionable duringthe com
ing season.
These picture hats,- by the way, are
finished with most remarkably high crowns,
six inches being the : average height. j When
they are quite straight, an even iiigher ef
fect is given by funning perpendicular lines
of ribbon, from the line of the briijr to; the
.top. While, of course, the high crown is,
fronvan. artistic standpoint, very sood, th
avcirage woman finds that she cannot wear
such an , exaggeration ; and, , ast her only
otherchoice is a small hat, it seems likely,
for ordinary occasions, she must choose the
lesser of the two evils. ; v
