Two rtver towboats got Into serious
trouble yesterday but both escaped luck
ily, considering th circumstances. Ths
George K. Wntworth caught fire short
ly aftsr leaving her Portland wharf and
only th prompt and daring work of th
officers and crew saved her.
Tbs Sarah Dixon of th Shaver Trans
portation company, lost her stern wheel
when coming up th Columbia with two
log rafts In tow and became totally
helpless In th swiftly flowing current
until anohors could b gotten out With
her wheel gone ths boat was unabl to
move and It wa nearly evening before
Captain Harry Chase could get word to
his company for asalstano.
In towing log steamers hug shore
closely to get the Denerit or Mates ana
ror this reason It wss dirricuit to sig
nal pssslng boats. Th Wauna of the
sams company, was sent to the scene
sst nignt to tow tns aisaDiea nsrsn
)lxon and her rafts to ths city. The
officers of the Wauna were also In
structed to call upon th steamer M. F.
Henderson for help if necessary. The
Henderson Is down ths river In the vi
cinity of Hodklns landing near where
the Sarah Dixon broke flown.
Th wheel 'dropped off a a result of
ths breaking of the ahsft Having been
lost In shallow water th wheel can
easily be recovered.
The fire on board the Wentworth
looked strlous when it threatened the
oil tanks. It Is ssld to have started in
the rear of the boat as she psssed
through the steel bridge. It was dis
covered slmost Instantly and all avail
able handa were pressed Into service to
quenrh It Captain O. W. Hosford wss
on the bridge and, fearing an explosion,
he immediately turned the boat toward
the eafct shore In order to save what he
rould both of life and property should
the worst have happened.
On account of the beach being ob
structs by an old overturned barge at
the point where Captain II oa ford hoped
to bind the ateamer it became necessary
to run her over the old site of the Vic
toria dock where the old piling still remain-.
Lurkllr the water was high
enough to permit the steamer to run
ever them but those who saw her head
for shore expected she would com to
frrlef. Large volumes of black smoke
sued from the lower but the
flames were finally subdued, and then
the steamer continued on her wsy down
th river sfter a log raft.
