committees of the Good Intent society
of the Methodist church snd the Hlstor
leal Society of Old Fort Dalles will hold
services tomorrow in commemoration
of the first sermon preached in this
city, seventy years ago, rrom Pulpit
Rock, one of the ojdest pulpits In the
wona. rne nrst preacnera were Kev.
Jason aLee and Rev. Perkins, In 1838,
on March 12, which also fell on a Sun
day. Those Intrepid snd earnest mission
aries spoke to. the Indians, nnd called
their audience together by means of a
large horn. The Indians flocked from
Celllo. Wlshram and all the villages
around.
The services tomorrow will be held
out of doors at the base of the ancient
pulpit of conglomerate rock. The pro
gram follows

tion. The ceremonies will be held at I
o'clock in the afternoon.
A bronse tablet, with the names of the
first missionaries and the date of ths
first sermon Inscribed, will be plsced on
the rock, and this will be unveiled by
Miss Wslf E. Grubbs, a granddaughter
of Jason Lee.
An Iron fence will soon surround the
old pulpit for Its better protection.

Perkins called his people to hear them
preach. He said they called them with
the blowing of a horn and that the red

aged, but retains an accurate memory of
Historical events and can state them
with .precision. He is, therefore, of
great value to nistory-nunters, for he
is not adverse to telling what he knows.

measures to' be voted upon at the gen
eral election in June, together with the
arguments for and against them, has
been begun by tbe secretary of state.
Already over 60,000 have been sent out
to voters whose names nave Deen sud

The state printer has prepared 100,000
of these pamphlets in all at a cost of
