well propones to avoid navigation of
Pend d'Orellls canyon, which has been
the difficulty in the wsy of the ore-
carrying trade on this stream. He will
operate the steamers Newport. and Elk,
with bsrges. on ths lower river, snd the
steamers Spokane, Metallne and the
Portland will tow ore barren on the run
between tha canyon and Newport
Baud Plant at Onoe.
8. B. Edwards, engineer of the Mam
moth Utd Mines company, returned to
day from a trip with machinery manu
facturers to the Metallne district, where
plsns were perfected to erect a 225-ton
concentrator for the Mammoth and
Morning lead mine companies. The con
centrator will be built at once. It was
designed originally for a 100-ton dally
capacity, but ths progressive policy of
sr. HiacKweii or ir.e Idaho & Northern
has changed the blSns of the enmnsnv
and a much larger plant will be Dut in
at a cost of about $50,000.

Mrs. Kennedy Sues on Ac

Because her home tumbled UHo an
excavation that was being made In an
adjoining lot, Art. Delia Kennedy Is
trying to collect $723 damages from
William J. Hawkins. Alfred J. Bingham
and Joseph McClelland. This is (he
value she places upon her . household
foods, which she says were ruined by
he catastrophe. The trial of the case
began before a Jury In Judite O'Day's
department of the circuit court this
morning.
The building that partly fell Into the
adjoining lot waa a three-story brick on
First street, be twee A Columbia and Clay
streets, known as the Newlqnd. Mrs.
Kennedy was a tenant in the building.
The excavation that undermined the
houae ws made by John F. Shea, who
was scooping out a basement. The
property belonged to Mra. Hawkins, and
her husband employed Bingham and Mc
Clelland to brace up the Newland and
keep It from being damaged. The
plaintiff alleges that the bracing was
negligently done and that proper pre
cautions were not taken. The wall of
the building fell on April 2, 1907.

Kenllworth. The movement for renew
ing the Madison street bridge as soon
as possible was indorsed.

exposition commis
sion, and David Lewis, architect, leave
for Seattle tonight to break ground for
the Oregon building, the contract for
building the same having been let to

Portland public schools, has astonished

tered the eighth grade in this city, so
that her rank with the London children
speaks eloquently for the character of

the street, sold to the Boston store at
a terrific sacrifice several thousand
dollars' worth of dry goods, shoes,
suits, underwear, sundries, skirts, petti
coats, linens, bedding, soaps, toilet sets,
etc. These goods were more or less
damaged by water, and would have been
sold at the big Third street store but
on account of the room required for a
sale of this magnitude and the spring
season about at hand, the Third street
store sod the entire-lot to the Boston
store at First snd Salmon streets. Here
the goods will eb sacrificed at next to no
price. Tne high standard of this lot
of goods will be quickly recognized by

CRAWFORD GETS
FOUR YEARS IN PEN
Four years In the penitentiary Is the
term to be served by J. J. Crawford for
his part In. , beating and robbing li.
Mtckle. He was sentenced by Judge
Oantenbein this morning after Henry
S. West brook, his attorney, had made a
plea for clemency. Westbrook asked
the court to consider the fact that
Crawford Is young, that, his record has
been good heretofore, and that he was
led Into the affair by older men, who
have escaped punishment. Juda-e Oant
enbein said that while he would con
sider these things, he must consider
the fact that Crawford commuted per

On the witness stand Crawford told a
wild story about ths-manner In which
a confession had been gained from him
by Sergeant Baty and members of the
