from the growers because it would de
feat the plans of the prlce-beatera If
the producers became discouraged and
plowed up a large per cent of their
holdings. Not more than 600 bale will
be sold at this orlce to an v. one brewer.
As has been recently forecast In The
Journal, the hop dealers are about to
make an effort to encouraae the grow-
ertf to remain In business and thus fur
nish the brewers with cheap hope and
the short sellers a chance to make
some ready money. The encouraging
K'tine Is already being passed up to the
growers this time In tne shape of a re
port that everyone in England la plow
ing up their hopyards. The same sort
of scheme Is being worked here. Where
there Is one hopyard being plowed up
in Oregon the short sellers spread the
report that 25 of them are going. This
Is done In order to make the growers
believe that the others are doing the
plowing so they themselves can remain
In the buBlncfs. Only a small amount
of plowing has been actually carried on
here and the same Is true of Kn gland.
Last year Oregon baled between 180,-
000 and 140.000 bales of hope. At that
time fully 26 per cent of the yards re
mained unpicked, so that If many acres
are plowed up this year the state will
still produce around 126,000 bales.
