r.-
That lumber prices 'have reached the
bottom is the general opinion of lumber
manufacturers, dealers and buyers and
If any change should occur In the near
future It will in all probability be in
favor of the dealer.
Lumber has been cheaper this winter
than for many years, and Is still down
to where the manufacturers assert they
are doing bualneas at a very small mar
gin of profit. One result of the low
f trice Is increased activity In the bulld-na-
line. It Is known for a fact that a
large number of bulldlnga were erected
and othera are now In course of con
struction aa a direct result of the re
duced cost of material.
There appeara to be a better demand
for lumber in the territories of Salt
Lake and east of the Rockies, although
the advanced freight rate la putting a
check to the eastern business. Inquir
ies are aald to be more numerous than
for Borne 'time, and aome large orders
have been closed. although at low
prlcea. Eastern and middle states buy
ers feel that they want to get the very
beat material turned out when they
have to pay the high freight. In order
to get the business, however, the manu
facturer haa to bring down the price
to allow for the extra freight and the
drop Incident to the general depresalon
in the market.
Foreign business Is good, although It
too la on a basis of low prices. Two
ordcra from Australia call for 6,000,000
feet, and the orient is still buvlnr.
California is buying- very little for
the present, in the first place because
or tne steam acnooner engineers strike,
wnicn nas thrown the steam schooners
temporarily out of commission, and In
the necond place because thev are atlll
feeling the effects of the tremendous
importation" or lumber from coast
ports shortly after the earthquake.
California la expected, however, to be
ready for ne- business in the very near
xuiure.
Construction work is progressing fa
vorably on the building covering the
half block on Fourth street, between
Everett and Flanders streets, which Is
being put up by the Dammeler Invest
ment company. The entire first story
Is up and work has begun on the walla
of the second story. When completed
the structure will be four stories high
and la to be occupied entirely by Chi
nese merchants and roomera.

Within the past two years Insurance
companies have come to recognise the
fact that nothing so so surely fireproof
aa concrete construction when sclen
tlfically handled.
Continued teats in fires have gradu
ally convinced fire underwriter that
concrete Is a true fire-resisting ma
terial. In all the large fires that have
occurred In tha past two years the--re-enforced
concrete structures that hap-
fiened to be in the burned area were
eft practically unscathed. It is a well
known fact that owners of well de
signed, honestly constructed and prop
eriy constructed etenrorceo
buildings receive the lowest
rate of insurance.
The conservative attitude which te
Insurance underwriters have taken re
garding concrete rlskH lias had a tend
ency to standardize the methods of con
structlon. Concrete in Husrentlble of
good, bad and Indifferent handling, and
for insurance people to lend their as
