Sunset Magaalne for March has this
to say of Magdalena bay and Its surroundings:
The formation of Magdalena bay Is
peculiar. From the peninsular coast at
the 'north headlands Jut out into the
sea. at the west a long narrow strip of
lard, sometimes called Man-of-war
Island, oarallels the tneaualltles of tin
shore line while to the south and south
west Ilea the Island of 8anta Mar
garita. By practically hemming in a
fiortlon of the sea these successive
ands form the harbor, for Magdalena
bay does not deeply Indent the coast.
As these proteotlve girders are loftly
enough to shelter the harbor from
gales, they served in olden days to con
ceal buccaneers and smuggling craft
from chance ships of the crown. The
formal gateway to the ocean lies be
tween the northern extremity of Santa
Margarita idtand and Punto Kntruda,
the southernmost point of the so-caJIed
Man-of-War island. There are addi
tional passages, however, for lagoons,
fringed with mangrove shrubs, run i
northward finally opening out Into the
Pacific others extend far . Inland
while to the south there Is easy egress
through Almaca bay.
Desolate Ooaatry.
The country Inland from Magdalena
bay la desolate In the extreme. First,
reaching from the shore eastward for
20 miles, comes a barren undulating
waste of sand and cactus. Next, the
plains sweep Inland with an upward
swell for another 20 miles, finally wed
ding with the hills and plains which
stretch down from the eastern cordillern
of the peninsula. Save for the mesqulte
which lines the broad shallow arroyos
occasional scars on the Interminable
desert the face of the country Is veiled
entirely with cacti. It is not a Dleasant
region: the ground la parched; the days
are stlfllncr hot. and great waves of
fog roll in during the nights and ef
fectually shroud the country in the
mornings. Until ho has proceeded in
land from 176 to ilt miles from the
bay, the chance wayfarer need have no
hope of finding the firtlle district along
which, strung out m tne rorm or a cres
cent, lie the historic mission aitos of
Todos Santos, La Pax, DoloVes del Bur,
8an Xavler, Comondu and Furlslma.
