club In Alblha are progressing. Josepn
Meier has been made manager and will
have general supervision of the work.

on the property between Stanton street.

Williams avenue. The block is one of

near the clubhouse Just east of Wil

It Is hoped to make the Catholic club

club not expected. The fair Itself Is

the field will begin soon. The fair will
be held during the last week In May
immediately preceding the rose arrow.

federated association in the quarters of
the East Side club last night The elec
tion assumed the character of an

east side and a great Portland.

In the work of ridding the city of Its
Infested trees before the Rose Festival
in June. Mr. Deich answered many
questions relative to the attention and
care of fruit and shade trees.
The clubs favorably received the sug
gestlons of the fruit inspector and it Ti
expected that action will be taken soon
toward advlaing the city to authorise
the park board to employ Inspectors for
the care of shade trees and other trees
in the streets. The trees are neglected
and are a menace to horticulture of all
kinds and better fruit In Oregon. Th

At a recent meeting of the United
East Side clubs a committee was ap
pointed to draw up a suitable resolution
pertaining to the' death of tha late, Col
onel E. M. Bfannick. The resolution
was submitted last night and unani
mously adopted. The resolution fot
lows:

nick, the whole northwest, and the city
of Portland in particular, has suffered
me irreparable loss or a man wno, aur
Ing his entire life among us, was be
loved ana respected by all for his ster
ling character and honest and' charit
able nature. He was a man who. in his
lire as a citizen, could always be counted
upon to lend his aid on any matter of
puouc or civic good, in which matters
his ripe wisdom, able counsel and ener
getic work were of incalculable value.
One of his chief aims waa 'the unbuild
ing' arid bettering of business and civic
conditions on -the east side.- and what
ever has been done in this respect may
be considered to a great extent a mon
ument of his work in these directions.
"His private and business life were
above reproach: therefore, be it

Funeral services over the remains of
Richard J. Latotirell, who died yester
day at his city home, iboi jbeimont
street, -Mount Tabor, will, ba held at
Troutdale tomorrow morning at 11 o'
clock. Mr. Latourell was one of the
founders of the litUe town of Latourell
near Latourell falls, v known far and
wide for their beauty.!
Mr. Latourell's home waa at Trout-
dale but his health being poor he moved

old and Is survived by a ,- father and

the - pioneers 'after whom Latourelle

Rv. Edwin N. O'llara of St. Mary's
cathedral gave, an address before the
Sellwood Reading circle at the Sellwood
Baptist church last night. He. talked
on "Stephen Langton and His Times."
Father O'Hara quoted the Anglican
Blshbp Stubbs as saying that more im
portant ideas originated in the thir
teenth century than in any other cen
tury In history, and urged a study of
the spirit of that parlod. Father O'Hara
said in part:
"Stephen Langton's name Is associ
ated In the popular mind chiefly with
the great triumph of English liberties
at Runnymede the wresting of the
great charter from King John, l.angton
rose to the position of archbishop of
Canterbury by reason of his great abil
ities as a statesman nd scholar. That
historic see had been the home of a long
list of distinguished archbishops, be
ginning, with Augustine and Including
saint Anseim and saint Thomas
Bucket. Langton was an Englishman by
birth, educated-at the University of
Paris. It was In time of great men
and great deeds. The foundations of
modern classic literature were being
laid: universities were sprlnglnar uo all
over Europe, Pope Innocent III had Just

age of cathdral. building had begun.
