October 30, 1805, the Masonic grand
lodge of New York, with elaborate cere
monies, consecrated a sllvei trowel and
tarted It on a long Journey to visit
every Masonic Jurisdiction In Christen
dom, its mission is to establish a
closer bond between all the lodges of
the worid. The trowel is now with the
lodge at Pocatello, Idaho, and la ex
pected to reach Portland In a few days.

Rev. Sylvan James Keater, paator of
the Clinton-Kelly Memorial Methodlat
Episcopal church, waa born April 6,
1171, near Lebanon In Linn county, Ore
gon, and spent his Ihtldhood and early
youth In the quiet, wholesome and In
vigorating environments of the farm.
Rev. Kestcr la an alumnus of Mineral
Sprlnae college and also of the Mon
mouth normal school, having graduated
from the college In 1897 and from Mon
mouth In June. 1899.
In tha fall of 1900 Mr. Kester went to
Colorado and a few months later en
tered the 'ministry of the Methodist
Episcopal church, being then but 32
years of age.
After five years of continuous serv
ice, during which he was ;antor at
Georgetown. Colorado, and Inter at Glen
wood Springs, Colorado. Rev. Kester re
signed his pastorate at Glenwood
Springs and returned to Oregon. Ho
undertook the work of oik-hiIzIiib a new
church in southeant Portland. Thw
church Is now completely organized and
named in honor of Clinton Kelly, one of
the early pioneer Methodist preachers
of Oregon.
The new church has grown rapidly.
A oomfortablo building has been erected
near the corner of Thirty-ninth and
Powell streets for Urn temporary uho
of the congregation. Plana hnvo been
adopted for a 36,000 church building to
he erected tins comnii summer on a
beautiful site donated to the church by
J. li. Kellv, and subscriptions have al
ready been secured to tho amount of
about $3,000 for the new building. The
Sunday school enrollment is now 144.

the circuit court late yesterday after
noon and arraigned on the new Informa
tion filed by the district attorney. Next
Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock was
fixed as the time for them to enter their
pleas.
The arraignments yesterday after
noon started a new chain of events in
the history of the Title Guarantee &
Trust company cases, the sustaining of
demurrers ln three cases having made
it necessary to begin over again. The
new Indictments have been drawn with
several new clauses and supplied with
technical lingo In an effort to avoid
further flaws ln phraseology.
