Opposing Improvement As
sociations in Montavilla
Unable to Get Together.
MontavUla is one section of the great
east eld where push clubs, boards of
trade, Improvement associations and
kother progressive organizations do not
flourish. , In this respect MontavUla Is
very different from other portions of
the'east-of-the-rlver district. The his
tory of the quarrels among the differ
ant factions in MontavUla la an Inter
esting one and datea back for a num
ber of veara.
For a lone time there existed twe
organizations, the MontavUla board of
trade and the MontavUla Improvement
aasoclation. Itotli were conscientiously
endeavoring to help MontavUla. First
they fought for annexation, then Bull
Run water, both of which have now
been secured. Hut becaune of continual
dissensions among the members as to
the location of certain Improvements
and other minor matters there has al
ways been more or less pulling in oppo
site ways detrimental to the upbuild
ing of the villa.
The suburb Is much spread out. with
Villa avenue at the north aide and the
Base Line road at the south side, both
sections demanding Improvements
through their respective property own
ers.
Iast winter an effort wis made to
get together by consolidating the two
organisations to be known as the Monta
vUla Improvement board. For a few
weeks it was thought the consolloatlon
would be successful. An executive
committee was appointed that did most
of the work, but soon the other mem
bers lost Interest A week or so ago
an effort was mado to revive the old
organisation but the task was a hope
less one. Every encouragement was
given the -consolidation scheme but the
united organization failed to prosper.
This wee it it ia reDorted that a re
organisation of the MontavUla board of
trade has been brought about through
the efforts of some of the members of
the old body. It has been decided
among them that more can be accom- i
plished despite the opposition that will
Inevitably follow. The organization
will, however, extend an invitation to
all who may wish to avail themselves
of the opportunity to come Into the
organization and boost for MontavUla.
The officers of the board of trade
are announced as follows: President.
C. A. Evans; vlce-prenldent. Charles
Hyie; secretary. Dr. William De Veny:
treasurer, J. C. Morelock. The club will
affiliate with the United East Bide
cluba The new organisation ia a Villa
avenue organization, having been
brought Into being In the Standard
Broom factory building on Villa avenue.

SELLWOOD NOT
READY FOR SEWER
Sellwood will not have a sewer for
some time. At a largely attended, meet
ing iti Welch's store Tuesday evening
it was unanimously voted to postpone
Indefinitely the construction of a sewer
in the district east of East Fifteenth
street because of the cost.
It was thought by those present that
the suburb had not attained that point
in Its development where a sewer was
needed in view of the fact that many
homes were still unpaid for and were
not even supplied with water. There
are a number of streets yet ungraded
and it is thought the cost would be so
as to make It Inconvenient at

REMARKABLE FEBRUARY SUCCESS
Our business last month the shortest of the year was 60 per cent greater than
anticipated; it exceeded by thousands of dollars our most enthusiastic anticipations
although our calculations were made last fall when our new building was being
erected, long before the business panic struck. We have proven that East Side people
will patronize a FIRST-CLASS EAST SIDE FURNITURE STORE, and that the
appreciate same. Also we have demonstrated that WEST SIDE RESIDENTS will
gladly cross the river when they can save big money. In fact, the large volume
of trade drawn from the West Side- has astonished us. To one and all who have
contributed to our remarkably rapid success we wish to express our deep sense of
gratitude.
