Caarles A. Barnes of the Knights of
Pythias was tendered a reception last
night In the Pythian temple at Eleventh
and Alder streets. Several hundred
Portland Knights, together with most of

The annual meeting of the Oregon
Life Insurance company was held In the

building yesterday afternoon. President
A. I- Mills read his annual report, and
afterwards delivered an address to the

Mrs. Viola B Bhurtllff died yesterday
afternoon at the residence of her son-in-law.
Otto F. Brandes, 394 Clay street,
after a lone- illness, resulting from a
Stroke of paralysis In 1901. Mrs. SHurt
l.ff waa a. natlv.f of Kansas, where she
was born, In 1839. She, with her hus
band, F. N. Shurtleff. who died several
years ago, came to Oregon In 1862, set
tling In Polk county. She leaves an
only daughter, Mrs. Otto F. Brandes,
who Is now ill at the Good Samaritan
hospital. Funeral arrangements will bo
announced later.
Owing to the failure of several or the

make their bids clear, the building com
mittee of the Y. M. C. A., which met
yesterday afternoon and opened the bids
on the work, decided to postpone award
