Steamer SenatorEncounters Strange
Weather-Off Oregon Coast.'
The steamer Senator of the Harrlman
line ran into a fierce hall and thunder
storm off .the Oregon coast . Sunday
night on her way to Portland. Captain
Nopander reported this morning when
tha liner arrived that it was one of the
most unpleasant hall Storms he -vhas
enoountered along the coast for some

. At one time the deck was covered
with fully three inches of hail and
sleet and It was almost impossible to
walk about At the same time vivid
flashes of lightning . pierced the sky
every now and then and light peals of
thunder were heard In the distance.
The steamer George W. Elder, which
arrived from San Pedro by way of Ban
Francisco and Eureka, escaped tha
worst of the storm. Her officers re
port having encountered squally weath
er, but they saw neither hall nor light.
DTne steam schooner Washington will
be at Couch atreet dock this evening to
iMscharKe freight, from Ban Francisco.
She reached Astoria at o'clock this
morning. 'v ,
