Let nobody come around prating of
the good old days of comedy and wish
ing that we might have a revival of
them. We had a revival last night and,
excepting for tho few to whom the
Dion Bouclcault recalled the many
pleasures of a distant youth, it was a
rather dreary affair. Perhaps the de
cadent drama haa poisoned our sys
tems. If that's the explanation, then
we ore too far gone to bone for re
demption. Let's be glad that we are I

He was mildly mellow In the part,
to bo sure. He went at it with that old
time assurance of his that it was funnv.
and he succeeded in convinolng a good
many thut it really was. Hut his ego
tism got the better of him and. Instead
of allowing Sir Harcourt to be a very
funny old man, he merely made him a
mildly amusing middle-aged one. It
was a genteel performance on the part
of Mr. Clement, but not an excessively
inspiring one. It simply created a
warmly humid atmosphere in which
Miss Davis could blow her white and
frosty breath.
But that there were a few old-timers
in the audience who were Immensely
entertained by the performance there
can be no doubt. FW them Sir Har
court was very funny Indeed. Upon
them Charles Courtley s sullies were
not wasted, and the old-fashioned graces
of expression were followed intelli
gently. Miss Kerrigan played Lady Gay
Spanker -with all her dash and enthus
