Mlehl lies in a hospital fatally burned
by boiling and blazing wax that sput
tered onto her face, hands and arm
from a pan.
Oscar Mlehl. her husband, heroically
fought to save her from flames that

Mlehl, who is a cabinet maker, had
set a pan of polishing wax on the
stove at the couple's home. It began to

the pan and started with it to the sink.
As he did so the wax sputtered out in a
shower, and Mrs. Mlehl, who was close
by, was struck by the greater part of it.

Boise, Idaho, Feb. 28. Dr. F. H.
Brandt of this city has just completed
an Important investigation into tbe
possibility that dogs may be affected
with diphtheria and communicate It
thronrh their mouths to nersons. Er
oerlmenta made by Dr. Brandt seem
to orova that the disease may be so
communicated and his report on the
investigation aroused mucti interest
among members of the Boise Medical
society at a meeting just held. The
experiments are the first of the kind
ever made In the west. They were
undertaken because or a susDicion that
diphtheria had been communicated from
one child to another in a Boise family
through the mouth of a pet dog which
was found to have the disease. Tho
experiment was made by the Inocula
tion of two guinea pigs with the bacilli
from the throat of the dog, which was
killed because of the strong evidence
that it was affected with diphtheria.

the 1S0S roll. The city tax is l7,
454.11 atd the city school tax 14,-
969.91. against J22.241.82 and 116. 169.62.
respectively, on the 1906 roll. The tax
for county purposes is, however, much
less this year.
Taxes are segregated, in part, as fol

house, etc., $162,793.25; city of Astoria,
237,464.62; town of New Astoria, $191,
89; town of West Seaside, $S1.82;
school district No. 1 (Astoria) $24,
