The Merchants' exchange received a
telegram from Han Francisco at noon
todav to the effect that the steam
schooner St.. Helens which left last night
supposedly bound for Portland, re
turned this morning.
Officers of the craft report that she
was sent to sea to clean the oil out
of the tanks with (he Intention of hav
ing her tied up until a culmination of
the englneera' atrlke. The St. Helena
belonga to E. J. Dodge A Co., mem
bera of the Steam Schooner Owner'
association.

torney Phelps is taking steps to prose
cute the owner or a aerunct jod print
ing plant in this city on the charge of
having printed the obscene cards for the
distribution of which J. P. Merdenach, a
local saloon man. was fined 10U in clr
cult court last week. A number of sa
loons have recently distributed these
cards and evidence has been discovered
by the district attorney that a job plant
which recently suspenoea in mis city

consular reports there have been 100
killed In the recent combat between
Christians and Mohammedans. Bul
garian bands have Invaded .the district
of Salonica, burning and murdering in

united in making reclamation for these
disorders and both powers fear they
foretell a general rising In the spring.

Campbell agreed to go to Bloomingdale,
and a court order waa obtained commit
