The Forbes Presbyterian church took
qut a permit this morning for the erec
tion of a frame church building on. Van
couver avenue, between Sollwood and
Stanton streets to cost $10,000. Thin
building Is to replace the structure that
was destroyed bv fire last fall. Im
mediately after the fire, Kev. Harry II.
Pratt, pastor of the church, set about
raising the fund with which to rebuild
the destroyed edifice. Practically the
entire sum has been raised, nearly all
out of it, having been contributed In
Portland and vicinity.
. After the opening exercises at Cen
tral W. C. T. U. Wednesday afternoon,
Mrs. H. M. Clinton gave an interest
ing talk on "The Present Need of the
W. C. T. U. Work." She referred to
tne different departments and the ex
cellent work carried on for so many
rears. Preparations were completed for
he fraternal meeting planned for next
week. A number of societies have
been invited and are expected to be
present. The usual novelty tea and
cake will be served at the conclusion
of the exercises.
Samuel Beck Has petitioned for let
ters on the estate of William Beck, a
brother, who died early In the month.
The estate is valued at $7,600. The
heirs are eight brothers and sister and
the children of a deceased sister.

hospital last night from a cancer. Mrs.
Vial waa a native of Paris. France.

about a Tacoma woman belna; the owner
of a copy of the Ulster County Gazette
of Kingston, New York, published in
January, 1800, most of which was de
voted to the funeral of George Wash
ington. Mrs. Agues P. Apted of 610
East Twenty-sixth street, Portland, had
a copy of the same Issue of the Ulster
County Gazette la her possession until
last week. Last Wednesday her son

night. ' The damage has not been de
termined, as the heavier part of it will
be to the black goods, which were kept

of water flowing over the sidewalk on
the Morriaon street side or tne store and
upon Investigation found that the store
was partly flooded and that the water
was coming from a dentist s office up
stairs. ,
Efforts to gain entrance to the store
S roved unavailing and it Was some time
efore Mr. McAllen could be reached by
phone. Upon his arrival men were put
to work, sweeping the water out of the
store and further damage stopped.
Mr. MoAllen wav unable to make a
statement as to his loss this morning,
other than to say that it would be very
heavy. The water first damaged the
