BREWERY FIEE DUE
TO GAS EXPLOSION
(Special Dltpitcb to The Journal.)
Astoria, Or.. Feb. 22. Investigation
shows that the fire at the North Pa
cific brewery Thursday night was
caused by an explosion of s-as. It ap
pears tho night engineer was clearing a
choked valve on the main lead from tho
luei on tanx, wnen the valve suddenly
opened and the accumulation of gas was
Ignited by the lantern which the en
gineer had by his side. An explosion
followed and the flames quickly spread
up the walls of the building and fanned
by the stiff breeree. soon enveloped the
entire structure. The engineer was not
Injured but he had a narrow escape
with his life. The damage to the prop
erty, which is fortunately covered by
Insurance, cannot be accurately esti
mated until the machinery has been
overhauled to see how badly It Is In
jured, but it will amount to not less
than 320.000 or $25,000. The greatest
loss to the company will be the forced
closing of the plant until repairs are
made.
