A new system of determining the
merits of golf players has been Inau
gurated at th Waverly golf links, the
first play starting last Sunday. Under
he new stylo the membeislilp has been
divided into clnssos. such r-.s A, B. C, D,
and so on. Kuch class has from elgh
to twelve players, and they will play
or positions In their various clauses.
After the positions havo been estab-
llshud the players will work to the head
or the list, always challenging tn
players. In the position lust above them,
Kor Ineunee. a player who finished No.
7 In his class may challenge No. i In
another clar.s, and If he succeeds 1m
beating No. 6. he takes that position,
while No. 6 goes back to No. 7.
In this manner It la possible to1earn
definitely who ara the best players In
the club, and teams may thus be equably
chopon to defend the club In future
contests. .
The women members of the club have
adopted the same method of determin
ing "who Is who" and will start off
their play aoout the first of next month.
Next Saturday afternoon the annual
Washington birthday handicap will be
played, and it la attracting much Inter

St. Loals to Chicago, playing all the best teams enroute and meeting defeat only eight times out of the '42 games played.
J Swann and five Df hla men, are now playing a week's schedule In WIscpnsin, prior tc starting on the return trip. The eight games
which they lost and the scores were ariollows: Dallas college, Oregon, 39 to 23; Los Angeles, 27 to 19; Salt Lake Y. M. C. A., 23 to 31;
Baker university, Kansas, 31 to 27; Kansas City Athletic club, 42 to 41; William Jewell college, 35 to 33; Chicago Crescents, 3? to 36; Chicago
Centrals. 40 to 35 .. . The Centrals are considered the strongest team In that city, while the Crescents have a great reputation throughout the
United States. ; . ,-! ,. ...... I ' . , ' "
In many of the games the Alaskans have .defeated their opponents by a larger number of points in a single game than the total number
rolled aS against them In their eight defeats. The record of 'Coach Swann is one to which he can justly point with pride and old O.'A. C. Is cer
tainly proud lot whit li9 has, done on this eastern tour,-; H Is expected home in a week or 10 day. ., , ' '
Ceylon Elephants Tuskless.
From the Cevlon Manual.
It is a singular thing that Ceylon is
the only part of the world where th
male elephants have no tusks; they,
have miserable little grubbers project
ing two or three Inches from the upper
law and inclining downward.
Nothing produces either Ivory or horn
In fine specimens througnout ' Ceylon.
Although some of - the buffaloes have
tolerably fine heads, they will notVbear,
a comparison with those of other doun- j
tries. Tne horns, or tne native catue
are not above four Inches In length.
