lynching were averted In South Omaha
tonight by the prompt action of the po
lice In closing every negro saloon and
poolhall In the city and ordering the
blacks off trs streets after Detective
Samuel Crummy of the Omaha police
force was shot and instantly killed in a
poolhall by William Jones, a negro des
perado, ones also shot at Policeman

of the crowd to some extent but threats
of vengeance against the entire negro

well, wanted in England on a charge of
Berjury In connection with the famous
Tuce-Duke of Portland case, was to
day oommitted to the Manhattan insane
asylum by Supreme Court Justice Clark.
The examiners last Thursday declared
Caldwell Insane. His heart is also said
to be weak and he is in no condition to
make the trip to England to answer
the charges against him.
