There was a decline of SOo a barrel
In the price of export flour today, and
patent graues will show a loss of 16e
on Monday. Other grades will be
quoted 6 to lDc lower.
The loss in price is due to the sharp
declines In the wheat market all over
the world which have caused flour to
drop steadily In nil markets except per
haps on the Pacific coast. The new
values will put export grades here at
$3.70; patents. $4.80; straight, $4, and
Willamette valley soft wheat brands at
$4.45 per barrel. '
The sharp loss In foreign wheat
values cost the local market lc a bushel
today and club la now quoted at 81c
and bluestem at 83c a bushel., track or
lc higher than this f. O b. There is
practically no business In the wheat
market at the moment owing to the ab
sence of foreign demand and the trade
Is awaiting a ateadler market with a

New York, Feb. 16. Union Pacific
led the advance In the stock market
yesterday and likewise was In the lead
of the declines during todsy's trading.
The market opened weak but made a
slight recovery. Under the leadership
of Harriman issues it sold off and soon
touched ths low point. Toward the
close it made a fractional recovery in a
fsw issues. ....
The reason for the decline In t nlon
Pacific today Is given by the trade as
the land investigations being made by
the government forces. There was also
talk that the government may enjoin
the Southern Pacific from paying Its
dividend.

EIID OF VOYAGE
American Ship Emily Eeed
Meets Doom Off Tilla
mook. TEN SAILOKS LOSE
LIVES IN WAVES
Captain Kessel Lose Bearings as
Result of Continued Bad Weather
and Reaches Coast Before Expect
ing It Coal Cargo on Beach.
Officers of the steam schooner Wash
ington, which arrived here last night,
saw the American ship Emily Reed sail
upon the cliffs that line the beach In
the vicinity of Tillamook. It was about
2: $0 o'clock yesterday morning fire
miles off shore that the Washington
passed within a quarter of a mile ot
the windjammer that at that time was
sailing straight for shore. Half an hour
later the ship was a total wreck and
10 men had met death in the waves.
Second Officer Steele was on the
bridge of the Waahlngton and he called
the captain. It was Intended to blow
the danger whistle but since the vessel
dlsplsyed no signals, the officer of the
Washington thought it would probably
look as if they wanted to "butt In." as
they expressed It. The vessel could
have been saved at that time had she
been sent about because the wind was
blowing fairly strong from tho south
east. Ten lives were lost when the ship
went to pieces In the surf, but no bodies
have washed ashore so far. The names
of the lost are: First Mate Duble. Car
penter Westlund, Cabin Boy Hlrschfeld
and Seamen Dixon. Darling, Jahnke. Co
henstad, Gilbert, Ahlstedt and Johnson.
Captain Kessel, his wifs, Second Mute
Thomas and Seamen Thompson. Sulli
van. Frenches and Bartell were savml
by remaining with the wreck until low
tide, when they experienced little dif
ficulty in getting ashore.
Wreck la Barly Morning.
The wreck occurred about 8 o'clock
or about half an hour after the vessol
was sighted by the Washington. Sho
went bow on and twisted in twsln al
most at once. The eonl lies strewn .11
along the beach and people in the vi
cinity will have fuel to last them some
rtlme. The survivors were brought lo
Bay City, near the entrance or inia
mook bay, and made as comfortable a
possible.
Captain Kessel states that very
uiLr mrl hren encountered all
bad
the
way from Newcastle, n. a. w., rrom
which port the Emily Reed was 100 days
out for Portland when she met her
fate. Head winds had delayed him and
several times the vessel had fought
fearful blows. She stood the strain
well, however, and was In good condi
tion when she hit-the beach. The mas
ter had lost his reckoning and did not
know how close to shore he was.
Tirst Boat Turns Orer.
The sailors who lost their lives tried
to get away In the boats. The first
one was swamped the moment It hit
the water and three of the men went
down to their death. Seven men for
ward were carried overboard by a tre
mendous breaker that swept clean over
the forecastle head. There was no
chance to save them. The captain, his
wife, and the members of the crew
saved clung to the taffrail on top of the
poop which remained out of water.
The cargo of 2,000 tono of coal was
consigned to the Pacific Coa-st company
of this city but was owned by Hind,

the fuel is already gluttlnr the market.
The Emily Reed was here last June
go. The coal company ooes noi rcm
hin aha lpft for San Francisco with
a cargo of lumber loadad at the mills
of the Portland Lumber company. From
San Francisco she went to Newcastle
expressly for the purpose of bringing
the coal cargo to this port. She should
have arrived hero several weeks ago
and was quoted at 20 per cent rein
surance. The ship was one of the old school
of wooden vessels, having been built in
Waldoboro, Maine, In 1880, by the Emily
Reed Khio company. Some years ago
Hind, Rolph & Co. bought her for its
Pacific coast fleet. Hei- net register
was 1,466 tons.

The Ville de Dijon arrived here sev
