Effort to Shut Hill Road Out
oi South Portland
Business.
An effort will be made before th.
Oregon railway commission to rellev.
an almost unbearable state of affairs as
to car .ervlce and .witching for South
Portland industries. Th. mill men hav.
framed a petition askinic th. commis
sion to compel a connection of th.
track. 6f the United Railway, company
with thOBO of the Southern Pacific com"
pany. .
It 1. said the Southern Pacific com
pany I. opposing the track connection
for the reason that with such a connec
tion the United Railways company
would 'be able to divert business to the
Portland & Seattle railway. At the pres
ent time the Southern Pacific railroad
and O. R. 4 N. Co. have a monopoly of
all South Portland freight tonnage, as
no other road can receive the business
over the United Railways Front street
track without passing; through the ter
minal yards, where a .witching oharg.
of $6 could be levied upon every car
that waa turned over to the Hill lines.
To Intrench It. company in thia posi
tion with regard to South Portland
freight ba.iness, the Southern Pacific
has begun construction .of a cut-off be
tween Beaverton and ' East Portland,
with a bridge across the Willamette
river at Elk Rock. By this route the
Southern Pacific would be enabled to
haul all of the SouthTPortland business
out via Beaverton and deliver it to th.
East Portland yard, of th. Southern Pa
cific and O. ft. & N. companies, and
leave the United , Railway, company
without ally bu.in... from that source,
al.o preventing th. Hill lines from et
tlnr any of the business.
The Oregon railway commission law
Is plain and unmistakable in its term,
requiring- trackage connection, and joint
rate, between competing roads within
the state. It 1. believed th. commission
will without loss of time make an order
requiring the Southern Pacific to per
mit a connection of It. track. ' with
those of the United Railway, .company
