After 11 jurora had been secured to
try him yeaterday afternoon, J. F.
Hawkea pleaded guilty to the charge of
horaa atealing before Judge Ganten
beln In the circuit court He waa given
an Indeterminate aentence of from one
to ten years in tha state penitentiary.
Hawkea' attorney made a plea for
leniency, urging the fact that he ia 65
yeara of age, and may not have many
yeare to live. Deputy iiatrict Attorney
Haney urged that the aentence should
be adfflclent to convey a warning to
horae thlevea, and stated that Hawkea
haa property worth $60,000, showing
that he could not plead poverty aa an
excuae for atealing.
Hawkea broke down and wept aa hla
attorney pleaded for a light aentence.
The charge on which he was convicted
waa that of atealing a valuable horse
from a. F. John eon. a Greaham farmer.
but several similar chargea could have
been brought against him. I
