during the day. Up till a late hour
their identity could not be established.

The St. Egbert belongs to the same
line as the St Hugo which will leave
here tomorrow for Europe with a cargo

SAILED WITH OFFICERS.
Captains of Steamers St. Egbert and
St. Huga Mourn St. Cuthbert Loss.
The British steamer St Cuthbert
which was burned and lost off the coast
of Nova Scotia last Saturday, belongs
to the same fleet as iha St. Erhert
and St Hugo now In this harbor. Cap
tain Cafferata of-the St. Egbert and
Captain Clements of the St Hugo are
well acquainted with the officers of the
Ulfated craft. .
Fifteen of the crew were drowned and
a number lost their Uvea in the flames
and Captains Cafferata and Clements
are auca downcast var Uie news. Cliiet
Officer Dlckerson of the St. Cuthbert
was sailing under Caotaln Clements ud
till a couple of years ago when he
joinea tne new steamer, cnier Engi
neer Patterson sailed under Captain
Cafferata for several years. It is not
known if these officers were among the
lost. -
The St. Cuthbert was a trifle larger
craft than either of the two in this
harbor at present. She had been en
gaged mostly in the cattle trade on the
Atlantic.

Launch Collides With Government

Astoria, Or., Feb. 4. While the launch
Columbia was rounding .Into Flavel'a
dock yesterday a piece of wood caught
in her propeller and she drifted with
the strong ebb tide against the dredger
W. 8. Ladd, tearing her house and most
of her rail away. She was not so badly
Injured as to stop running on her route
to Chinook.
