T
HE above illustration ii a repro
duction from a photo taken on
tha occasion of the first illu
mination of the new Multnomah
block on Tuesday evening, Jan
uary 28.
This handsome office structure
was thrown open for occupancy yes
terday morning, and by night scores
of offices were filled with tenants.
Among the most Important lease
holders are the Security Savings &
Trust company, H. Lelbes ft Co.,' J.
Pollvka, Potter-Chajfin Realty com
pany, Christensen, the Otis Elevator
company, Oregon Life Insurance com
pany, Mutual of New Tork and the
Aetna of Hartford.
The new quarters of the bank on
the corner of Fifth and Morrison are
1 among the most elaborate to be seen
In the city. The richness of design
and finish of the new mahogany fix
tures of the bank, as well as the
burglar and fireproof vaults, will at
tract widespread notice.
The most modern fur store, show
rooms and factory in the west is the
claim made by John P. Plagemann,
manager of H. Webes & Co., for their
'new and permanent location in Mult
nomah block. After a brief inspec
tion, the visitor will agree with Mr.
Plagemann. as nothing has been left
undone that could enhance the beauty
of the premises. AH of the wood
work is in highly polished mahog
any, blending perfectly with the buff
tinted walla, hardwood floors, and
the soft rich luxurious furs which the
handsome cases contain. The Show
rooms and factory are located on tho
second floor, which Is reached by a
private electrlo elevator. Two large
reinforced steel concrete storage
vaults will be reserved at all times
for the exclusive use of customers
who may wish to store their valuable
furs. Llebes A Co. have shown great
confidence In the future of Portland
and the northwest to Install such an
expensive plant, and John P. Plage
mann, the manager, is entitled to the
heartiest congratulations for the ex
cellent taste and rare judgment dis
played In the arrangement and fur
nishing of the Lelbes establishment
Among the most elaborate and
prominently located offices in the
building are those of J. Pollvka & Co.,
of these elegant tailoring parlors
have been specially designed, which
lend an aristocratic appearance en
tirely new in the west.
An Innovation Is the location on
one of the upper floors of a splendid
ly equipped jewelry establishment.
C. Christensen. for many years with
Butterfleld Bros., as chief jeweler
and optician, has departed from the
precedent set In the west of being on
the ground floor and adopted the
eastern Idea that it is the stock of
precious stones and choice wares that
draws the crowds, not simply the
location.
Elegant new offices in this build
ing have been fitted up by the Potter
Chapln company. "The best equipped
real estate offices In Portland are
none too good a representation for
the best resort on the Pacific, vis:
Bayocean Park, on Tillamook Bay,"
said one of the managers yesterday.
The firm extends a cordial invitation
to the public to visit their offices, of
which they have good reason to be
proud.
The appointments of the building
throughout are the very finest In
every respect, and reflect great
credit upon the contractors and build
ers who brought ths edifice to a suc
cessful completion to the satisfaction
of the owner and the architect
