(United Pms Leased Wire.)
Washington, D. C, Jan. 31. The first
retirement of the year among high
ranking officers of the army took place
today, when Brigadier-General J. M. K.
Davis was removed from the active list
by operation of the ae limit. General
Davis' latest command waa that of the
department Of the gulf. He Is a native
of the District of Columbia and grad
uated from West Point Just after the
close of pie Civil war. In his early
army career he saw much active serv
ice on the Indian frontier, and was
steadily promoted until he .reached the
grade of brigadier-general last May.
The next retirement among general
officers . will be that of Major-General
A. W. Greely, formerly chief signal of
ficer and now in command of the de
partment of Dakota, in March. This
will leave a vacancy in the grade of.
major-general and permit the promo
tion of a origadler-general, with a con
sequent vacancy In that grade. The
other brigadier to retire will be General
