WITHERSPOON SCORES TRIUMPH
By G. I. W-,
After all the voice Is only a very

nal though there were few there to
witness It
Mr. Wttherspoon has a delightful air
of informality that wins his audience
easily and gives birth to a feeling of
mutual understanding, an air that suits
him for that most delightful of musical
pletlng his opening numbers, both no

his request and the warm, "homey" feel
ing that pervaded the house the rest of
the evening. All were at one with the
singer and it seemed that they were
talking with him, and they certainly
were feeling with him. It is an art to
be able to take hold of an audience that
way.
The next number was a selection from
"Figaro sparkling with humor and
teasing and tossed off In a lively, taunt
ing manner that brought the house. The
next group was a collection of German
songs of the old ballad style, the later
heroic song, and the newer realistic
music represented by Strauss and Hans
Hermann. One might say that Wither
spoon Is at his bext ' in the German
lieder only that when he sings 'any
thing else he seems at his best in that.
But Schubert's ghost song was sung
with such splendid tragedy, the Schu
mann wall of a heartsick soul with such
depth of pain; Schumann's "Knabe mlt
dem wunderhorn" with such t air of
camaraderie; the Ha lie "Walrtenaam
keit" with such daintiness that each
was a perfect bit.
In1 that group was Hans Hermann's
dreamy "Helle Nacht"' so beautifully
sung that it had to be repeated, but no
number was better done than Strauss'
"Im Spatboot," hard to sing and beau
tiful to hear, with a wonderful accom-
fianlment of the boat's motion excel
ently done by Mrs. Witherspoon at the
piano. Dainty, too, was her moonlight
accompaniment of the Hermann num
ber. A second Hermann number. "The
Three Comrades," was sung in English
with splendid tone color.
The English group following incluied
one of his best songs, "The Pauper's
Drive," done with Intensity, and with a
rapid and splendid change from the
Devil-mSy-care to the God-does-care
mood. A delightful pastorale and Her
man Lohr's fine "Messmates" were well
sung, The French group, though well
sung, was not so popular, merely be
cause the songs did not. appeal quite so
readily as the others. A Bizet song of
food fellowship caught hold the best,
he old songs from Britain went charm
ing, but when the singer struck into a
catching Irish brogue and sang two
aonas from the unland and th middle
of 'Ireland, there were many that
thought he was from ould Ireland hlm
sel', and the delight broke into an open
laugh.
Mr. Witherspoon was warmly en
cored and repeated several songs and
gave by request "Mother o' Mine," for
which he is famous. Other encores
were "Memory," by Edna Park, and
"Annie Laurie." Throughout his work
was characterised by a lack of the usual
"bellowing" quality of the basso, and
there was no attempt to roll about on
the lower notes to show his depth of
voice. Rather, most of his work was
done In the middle register and his
upper notes developed some surpris
ingly sweet, pure tones of almost tenor
quality. His pianissimo was as dainty
as of lighter voices, and when his
lowest notes were sounded they were
rich and round and mellow. Withal his
stage presence, his charming afr of ln-J
lormamy, nis sincerity and his pleas
ure in his own work made It. a delight
ful recital."
Mrs. Witherspoon accompanied him
with sympjuhyand understandlnr. She
was equal to the most difficult part of
her task. At a request from Mr. With
erspoon for aid, several in the audience
prevailed on Mrs. Warren Thomas tt
