"Almost every guest It seems has his
little tale of troubles or a story of a
happiness or of misfortune that he
wants to tell some one and, in many
cases we clerks are that some one," a
clerk at the Hotel Portland said this
t-nornlnff.
"Just for Instance a man I have
known for years and who gets here
about once a year came up to the desk
last night and handed me a clipping
from a newspaper,-' continued the hotel
man. "I naturally expected that it was
some story about himself.
"It was the story of the death of his
wife In Chicago due to Injuries sus
tained by a fall- from a window. The
traveling man had just got off the road
and together with his wife was at
work in their new home arranging
flower pots In a window. The woman
lost her balance and fell to her death
before the eyes of her husband, who
was absolutely helpless to save her.
"The poor devil wanted sympathy.
Here he Is hundreds of miles from
home and friends and he has just
wanted to tell of his unhappiness to
some one. If any man ever had a happy
home and one that he enjoyed. It was
this fellow to whom I refer. And now
it Is gone. 'It -seems to me now,' he
said, 'that there Is no world for me
nothing more to live for.' Sympathy
isn't much, as a rule, but sometimes It
helps, to cheer the unfortunate ones we
happen to meet. '

"After this fellow had gone from the
counter another came up with a tele
gram In hi hand. He waa smiling all
over his face. He had Just been pro
moted to a position he had been longing
for for years and was to receive a sub
stantial raise In salary with It.
"There was the contrast the happy
and the downhearted. I congratulated
the fortunate one and laughed with him
of his bright future. But at the same
time away down in my heart I couldn't
help but think of the poor fellow whose
life had been changed and who is now
eKing out an existence mechanically.
