The first quarterly and district meet
ing of the Woman's Home Missionary
society of the Oregon conference will

; Last night Harry C. Whlttier, an a
gtesslv and abla advertising man, left
for La Crosre. Wisconsin, where ha has
accepted the position of manager of the
Doerfllnger company department store; ,
Mr. Whlttier resigned this same position
five years ago to como to Portland, and
he returns to La Crosse at an increased
salary. Mr. Whlttier, while in Port
land, was a prominent figure in the
Portland Ad club and the "Made in
Oregon" exposition and has left a valu
able impress upon the advertising
work of the northwest from a mercan
tile and municipal standpoint.
"Behind the Scenes" Is a little com
edy that will be presented tomorrow
evening at the east side Woodmen hall,
East Sixth and Alder, by the young peo
ple of St. David's church. The mem

Two boys on horseback ran down
Mrs, A. Gleason and her daughter. Miss
May Gleason, Sunday at. East Morrison
ana East Water streets. The women
were crossing the street when the boys
rode down upon them, directing the
horses straight toward them. Miss
Gleason was knocked down and trampled
and seriously Injured, but the . mother
managed to keep her feet and was only
slightly bruised.

The United States civil service com
mission announces., an examination to
be held February M, for eligiblea to
fill, the ( position of monotype - caster-
operator at 35 cents an hour for an
lght-hour day in the government print
ing office, Washington, D. C. Also for
the position of laboratory assistant in
timber tests in the forest service, ex
amination to be held March- 11. The
salary la S600 per annum.
The Women's Union Label league will
hold an open meeting Monday, February
10, at 205 First, between Taylor and
Salmon streets, on the occasion of the
third anniversary of the organization of
the local league. Speeches on appropri
ate subjects, music and luncheon will
make the evening attractive. To the
women of the household the union
label Is a guarantee that the wages
earned under union conditions are ex
pended upon union products and for the
maintenance of union conditions. By
demanding the union label the house
wife extends her Influence from the
home to the workshop. The invitation
to the anniversary meeting has been
extended to all the trade unions of the
city.

land board of trade will hold a special
meeting Friday . to determine - upon a
place of meeting for the ensuing year,
and to hear a report of the retiring aeo-
retary, J. B. Labor, covering the period
of three years he has officiated in that
