-Butter always goes hand In hand with

the price reached a new high record for
this part of the country, several of the
most prominent-brands being advanced
to Id cents a two-pound square. Thla
la I cents higher than any prices
reached here since the .creamery busi
ness became prominent. -4JX course,
there are all sort of prices In the but
ter market rnor. of them, in fact, now
than usual. Most of the makers claim
mat supplies are still very uoerai, ana
they are showing no disposition to dig
deeper into the pockets of housewives.
This season'1 has been a moat unusual
one In the butter market, and for this
the average consumer can thank her
lucky stars. The average butter-buyer
does not purchase supplies Just because
it nas a iancy name, it is quality mat
oounts, and. sometimes in the most ob
scure places the beet quality can be

rially reduced front what .fancy-named

Eggs are gettirfg so plentiful that prlees
are dropping almost every day and will
likely continues to do so unless there la
a suddstr cold snap. It ia getting very
close to the time of year when egg pro
duction is . Increased. Already are
larger vupplies In California and the
trade of that state is endeavoring to
eell some in thla market at lower Tal
lies. As everyone here has all the eggs
wanted the lower prices are sure to
oome unless the long-expected cold snsp
materialises. .
' Once upon a time and not so long
ago that most people have forgotten,
the Portland fish markets were crowded
with supolles Of sturaeon. Thla famous
Columbia river fish was so plentiful It
years ago that It was too cheap to use
by many. It was not .until soma asst.
em people came out here that the fish

demand for sturgeon was very heavy.
The call for supplies became so heavy
that fishermen Stayed out in the rlv.r
day and night In order to supply the de
mand. This resulted In fishing out of
nearly all the stock and the once de-

Columbia river smelt are eo cheap
now that they have supplanted almost
all other fish on the bill of fare. Qual
