Members of the way and mean cora-t
mltte of the city council paid little
heed to the recommendation of Tbomaa
O. Qreen and Chief of Police Grlts
maoher in selecting a alt for the pro
posed new east aide city jail yesterday,
when they selected the property owned
by. William Reldt. at East Eighth and
Hancock streets, for the naw structure.
The price to be paid la $3,000 and the
property covera one half block.
Mr. Greene. R. Ia Babln and D. U.
Donaugh, membera of the police com
mittee of the city executive board, to
gether with Chief of Police Urltamacher,
recommended a alte at Union avenue
and Hancock street at a purchase price
of 14,170. Mr. Donaugh afterward
changed hi ' recommendation and ap
proved the alte finally decided upon by
the waya and meana committee.
Chairman Greene of the police com
mittee spoke at length in favor of the
alt at Union avenue and Hancock
street When the committee finally
voted for the site at Eighth and Han
cock, he aald that "we will hesitate to
build the station there."
His meaning was not clear, but It la
supposed to have meant that residents
in the neighborhood will raise objec
tions to the proposition and atop pro
ceeding In the council. Thia was con
strued from the further remarka of
Rev. E. W. Mowre. Dastor of the Meth
odist church, who said that the loca
tion of the Jail at Eighth and Hancock
would be strongly opposed by the resi
dents. Councilman Menefee, represent
ing the. ward In which the property la
located, objected to the site, but came in
too lata to participate In the meeting
until after the vote had been taken.
