When the liquor license committee of
the city council meets January 20, the
membera will have a Hat Of more than
saloon-keepers to consider whether
their licenses shall be revoked. These
placee have been complained against by
Captain Bruin, whose allegations put
the resorts In a class outside the pale
of the law. Some; of them are charged
with harboring thugs and robbers, while
othera are complained against for al
lowing women to frequent them.
Further, the charges are all of aen-
aatlonal nature and If proved will allow
the committee but one courae of action.
f or Instance the Tom Fallon saloon la
charged with harboring thugl and rob
bers with Kallon'a knowledge. As to
the Denny saloon acrosa the street from
the chamber of commerce building Cap
tain Bruin reports that the place caters
to the trade of disorderly women and
that a man was recently shot and killed
in the resort

list of witnesses sgainst this resort.
Municipal Judge Cameron, Clerk Frank

Detectives Coleman and Alden.

case of heavy fogs and assaults by large
squadrons of torpedo boats. To offset
this weakness the mine system baa ben
given especial attention. Mine planters
are badly needed at San Francisco and
here but the system of planting them
and working them has been extensively
practiced and with proper apparatus the
bay of San Francisco and the mouth
of the Columbia could be made lm
paaslble for warships of an enemy.
"In an open attack the mouth of the
Columbia could never be reached with
out disaster to an enemy's ships. The
batteries are well protected and the
guns and men are good. San Francisco
is in the same position. She is one of
the best defended cities in the world.
Where the danger lies is in the pop
ulous sections of the Pacific ooast,
which are hard to defend, such aa
Puget sound and San Dlejro. San Dieso
could make a good 'day' defense, but a
light fog and a dark night would glvo
an enemy opportunity to creep up close
enough to throw shells over the sand
spit at Coranado and destroy the city.
