Department Will Be Forced

San Francisco, Jan. 10. The indict
ments aaalnst Joshua, Jacob and Her
man Epplnger, who at one time were
the laraest grain brokers on the Pa
rlfio coast were dismissed by Judge
Lawlor this morning.
The indictments charged them with
obtaining money under false pretenses
on alleged bogus warehouse receipts
for grain. The cases had been set for
trial April 18, 1908, but in the fire .of
that date all or the record were de
stroyed and the inability of the district
attorney's office to restate these rec
ords resulted in the dismissal of the
case this morning.

will frankly declare for Japanese exclu
sion in terms that will leave no doubt
to the atltude of the party toward
that question bepame known today. The
information comes from a source con
idered highly authentic and follows an
interview granted by William J. Bryan
in Chicago th other day ln which he
declared he favored exclusion.
The Impression is that those who
will have much to do with the framing
of 'he Democratic platform took their
cue from this statement and began the
building of a platform to meet Mr.
Bryan's views on this subject. This Is
considered 'a shrewd move on the Dart

state into the ranks of the Democrats.
It is said also that Bryan shares
the belief of his advisers that an ex.
elusion plank will win in these state
quicker than anything else.
