of fame and fortune which once sur
rounded, George W, Brpwer by denying
a new trial of his suit against II. W,
liemcke. Brower is an inmate of a
soldiers' home in California and had an
Invention which he expected to revolu
tionise the street railway Industry. He
made a contract with Lemcke, but the
deal was not carried out as planned.
B rower sued for heavy damages, and
Judge Gantenbein awarded him fl. He
wanted another trial, but this the court

Answering the suit brought by the
Krebs Hop company, E. J. Smith, a New
York hop buyer, admits that he la under
contract to purchase the crop- from a
400-aere place for a term, of years, but
declares , that the company has this year
offered him hops of an Inferior grade,
a portion of which were not grown on
tho farm mentioned In the contract.
He alleges similar violation of the con
tract In other years.
The ways and means committee of
the city council yesterday decided . to
wait upon the police committee of the
cltv executive board and hold a Joint
conference In regard to the purchase of
a site for the proposed new east side
Jail- -Both committees have received
bid on sites near. Union avenue and
East Eighth street 'and it Is expected
the conference will result In the selec

Active work on the Rose Festival will
he resumed tonight when the various
committees will convene in the head
quarters, of the Portland otose Festival
association In the SweUand building and
discuss plans for the campaign for
funds. The committees will meet at 8
o'clock and the situation will be gone
over inorougniy.
Bear Co. gave its annual banquet
Monday night to the stockholders and
employes of the company at the Com
mercial club. Mr. Beall presided as
oastmaster, and many clever speeches
were made. Plana for the coming year's
work were discussed. : The officers of
the company are John Beall, president

Krats, has submitted his final report to
the county clerk. The total receipts
were. 112,805, all but $50 of which was
expended In pro rata payments to cred

: There Is a balance' of $$8,288 In the
estate- of Amanda W. Reed, according
to the seventh semi-annual account filed
in the county court yesterday. In June,
at the last report, there was only $22,
045 on hand. Since then the receipts
