Quit a stir was created In the police
court this morning when It was dlscov
,ered that the prosecuting witness In the
case against J. J. Crawford, James Mil
der and Thomas' McQIynn. charged with
i. assault with a dangerous weapon, was
" missing and.eoiild not be located by the
police or his friends. Officers were sent
, ' out and are still engaged tn the search
jifor thevjnlsaing man. -
About 10 days asro Bemadotte Mick.
; ' ele, an elderly Italian railroad laborer,
' was assaulted ' In his 1 tent at Sey
' mour ' avenue and First street by
'( three." men. The' purpose of the as
- sault was robbery, but. as Mickele had
deposited his money in a safe place a
. few hours before,-his assailants got lit
: tie. -They did. however, give the old
man a terrible beating, inflicting in
juries that made it necessary to send
, him to a hospital.
f t ; The police arrested Crawford, Miller
'and McOlynn and charged them with the
commission ef the crime. Mickele left
' the hospital and appeared In court when
.the case was called last Tuesday, but
since that time has not' been seen by
any of his friends. He did not return
to the hospital or to his former plaoa of
residence. His hospital fees are being
paid by the railroad company, and It
was his Intention to return there after
going to court Tuesday. His friends fear
that some one Interested In the defense
of the three men charged with the mur
derous assault may have spirited Mick-
"tie away in order to keep htm from tes
tifying against the accused men.

The campaign against the orientals

GROCERIES
In the near future I am going to open
up that grocery store or department
tnat I nave neen promising tor tne past
tour months. A detailed announcement
of the same will be made In a short
time and it, will be a "posler" Indeed.
It will also Include a statement about
opening tip the men's tailoring depart
ment again, the latter I already know a
good deal aDout so i am . not stuaying
much on that But that grocery con
cern appears to afford me an unlimited
field for study and Investigation. There
seems to be hundreds of little and big
things connected with a grocery not
to speak of women's tempers spoiled,
husbands' stomachs ruined and babies'
health Impaired on account of groceries.
The first thing that attracted my at
tention was sugrtr, beginners or babies
are always attracted to sugar. Well, at
first I couldn't see why it was that a
dollar's worth of sugar wasn't always
the same size package, yet would weigh
the same, and I concluded that to obvi
ate this seeming discrepancy, all grocer
ies should nave an aosoiuteiy water
proof roof on the building in which they
are kept I have decided -that will set
tle that "
The rotten apple question seemed

cheaper in the winter an
Hummer and fall. Then tl
flour. .That always was a-pusxle and
source of wonderment to me even while
a small boy, when I 'used to ride the old
bay mare borne rrom town witn a sac:
of "Cross Roads XXX Best" or "White
as Snow," "Light as Goose Down" In
one end ana a roca in tne otner ana
slung across the old faithful animal's
back. I say It was a pusxle at times If
that was "Cross Roads Best" what the
worst was like. Evidently flour makers
nut arreatstress on the name and the
poorer the flour the more elegant the
name. So I kind of thought flour ought
to be numbered as Portland No. 40. Bal
timore No. 60, St Paul No. 70, Mtllers
No. 10. and let the dealer brag it up and
back it up and the housewife determine
Its merits and not ouy it Decause u naa
pretty .name.
Then the way people order their gro
ceries Is interesting should have par
ticular attention. A lady will phone
you to send up a sack of "nice" pota
toes, a box of "fine" apples, a roll of
"aood" butter and the grocer goes ahead
and sends up the goods. Maybe it's
good and maybe It Isn't. Therefore,
from the fact that the customer never
phones to send up a sack of poor pota
toes, a roll of rancid butter, It would
follow if a grocer wants to be honest
and keen a trade he should never have
anything but what was good.
I see human nature stands out more
clearly In connection with this grocery
business than any other business. Then
there Is the problem In what propor
tions a grocer should carry stocks of
celery and cheese.1 as celery makes
"nerve and It takes nerve to eat much
cheese. I am still deliberating on tnat.
Also when I was east, I noticed some
grocers carried patent medicines. I am
considering what relation they have to
groceries. "
Then there Is the question of a clean,
sanitary grocery, absolutely essential
if vou want to deliver good goods. A
srocCry can be run like a slaughter
house or Ilka a well-kept pantry, I guess
I'll conform to the latter.
And then thece are so many more
thtnaa to consider. I'll have to leave
them go at present and let the mann
er or mis arocery lacme mem. i uu boo
am not aoinir to try to tell him how to
run it for he is well posted and knows
the business. I'll simply hand him a
copy of these Investigations of mine so
he will know I have been thinking of
him and his work. You see my par
ticular and personal business is to look
more after the outside requirements of
people than the Inside.
" Now everybody and anybody who
wants to talk to me about groceries,
from selling buying, clerking for me,
delivering, bossing, working partner
ships in the business, how groceries
should be run and how they should not,
come and see me right away for this
grocery will start quick. The room Is
ready, the "Mt till is ready, and peo
ple get hungry every day, seral times.
