THEATRICAL NOTES.
London, Nov. 23. During hfr recent
vial t to London Mme. Sarah Bernhardt
the famous actresa, gave the He to the
rumor that'ahe Intended to retire from
the stage at the nd of thta season.
"Ii cannot conceive what my life
would be without work." the actress
aald, "and I have never said anything
which might bo construed aa meaning
that I intend to retire. It may. of
course, be my last season, for I realise
that I am an old woman and my life
is in uoa s hanas, out as long ss l am
living I shall continue to work, and I
. ran think of no more beautiful death
than that which came to Sir Henry Irv
ing, wno aiea in narness.
Mme. Sarah Bernhardt celebrated her
sixty-third birthday about two weeks
ago, but on the stage she Is still able
to look like a woman of SO, and sho
plays with the agility and enthusiasm
of a girl In the twenties.
There is not a single theatrical fam
ily in the United States the founder of
which was born In this country. The
Barrymores and their relatives, the
Drews, all sprang from English acting
stock, and the first of the Jefferson
came from England, as did the first of
the Wallncks.
E. H. Sothern, who since the death of
Mr.' Mansfield has been acclaimed by
many as the representative American
actor, was born In New Orleans, it Is
true, but his father. E. A. Sothern, was
an Englishman. The Booths and the
Wllkeses. two theatrical families mem
bers of which have shed much luster
on ths stage in ' this country, were
known upon the stages of Drury "Lane
and Covent Garden years before any
adventurous member of either clan es
sayed a voyage to this country.
Louis Mann, after an unsuccessful
season In "The White Hen" in Chicago,
has severed his connection with his
managers, the Schuberts, and will ap
pear at Klaw & Erlanger's "advanced
vaudeville" theatres, under the manage
ment of William O. Brady.
Bloto-s "Mefistofele," wiflch will be
given at both the Metropolitan and tho
Manhattan this season, has not been
heard in New York since the later year?
of the Qrau regime at the Metropolitan,
when Margaret Mclntyre, the Scotch so
prano, was the Marguerite, ana neiene.
Charles Frohman announces the early
production of a play by Clyde Fitch en
titled "The Bluff.': "The Captain," by
Broadhurst and.Datey, is asotjier Froh
man production to be seen this season.
Annie Russel. who has been spend
ing the summer in Maine, returned to
New York last week to confer with her
manager concerning tier new piay, x-aiu

D'Orsay and Cecilia Loftus produced a

From the Billboard.
"Will you pass me in' please?" asked
a Sleek Tellow or tne ooorneeper ai me
Qarrick theatre, Chicago, recently.
"Who are yoU7" asuea ine guaraian
of the door.
"I'm an actor. .
"You're an actor, are you? Well,
what's fhe actor's password?"
"Broke.". was the prompt repiy, as nis
hand went above his head.
"You're on. Pass rigni in.
Henry W. Savage is now arranging
for a limited visit to Old Mexico of
his "Madam Butterfly" company to give
the PUcclnl opera in English next Jan
uary after the New Orleans engage
ment. Nowhere on the American con
tinent is the Italian composer more pop
ular than In Mexico, where hts music
was first sung on this aide of the ocean
by the llttlo Italian opera company that
had "Ln Boheme" In its repertoire In
1897. The ronJng proponed Mexican
visit of "Madam Butterfly" Is In re
sponse to a special request from mem
bers of the American club In Chlhau
