Newest Fruit District Beats

Oregon's Fame.
Portland resident woke up to th
fact yesterday morning that Oregon pos
sessed four great apple growing dis
trict Instead of three as had been com
monly supposed and that the district
tributary to Coos bay tho latest see
tlon of the state to proclaim and
rrov Its superiority In apple produo
Ion I In a fair way to make good It
alogan "Heat a 'em all," In the grow
ing of Oregon's delicious, red-chocked
beauties.
To prova thi statement It ls only
necessary to say that the magnificent
display of apples In th Washington
street show window of Olds, Wortman
A King's department store waa In
stalled by tha Marshfleld chamber of
commerce from apple grown In th
coast district of Coos county. The ex

Is on a two weeks pleasure trip to

known standard varieties: Northern
Spy, Ben Davis. Baldwin, Spltzenburg,
Qravensteln. Langford. King and th
Coo River Beauty,, tha last named be
ing a choice seedling or rine color and
flavor which originated In the Coos
bay country.
In speaking of tha exhibit. Mr. Sea
man said: It 1 only within the past
rew years thai tne people or coos
county have realised that the soil of
this section was capable of growing
to perfection the standard varieties of
applea. But the Gravensteln Is the
apple that thrive best In that
county, and la the variety that ls bo
Ing most largely grown. Our North
ern Spvs and Spllienhyj-gs are also
especially fine In color and rich In
flavor. Within five years Coos county
will be producing 10 times a many
apple a now, and I believe In a fw
year will he the leading applu-pro-dudng
county In th state.
Th Marshfleld chamber of commerce
recently offered a 125 prlie for th
beat box of Coos county applea. Nearly
every orchardlst In the county en

which resulted in a magniriccnt mow

Agricultural collego, awarded the prlie
to an exhibitor of Oravenstelna, and
In doing bo, he declared that the prlxe

Coos county is said to be absolutely
free from all kinds of fruit pests, and
every precaution la being taken by tnoTX
