Recently a plea was set up that Amer ican girls were discriminated against in the ' making of modern marriages be cause they were not provided with a dowry as are their continental sisters. The writer who urged the adoption of the foreign custom said that the settle ment upon the wife of a certain sum made her independent of her husband to some extent. She is thereby, it is claimed, given a proprietary right In viia tuuura oi mo noma ana acquires a dertaln dignity. " uowry lino mat is undoubtedly a fine beginning for married life, but I bi-d no guoa reason why it should be nanded over to the husband, it mirht uo more logical to require the husband to bestow a dowry upon himself to be placed in the wife's hands, for the nu merous vicissltufles which thev mav encounter in the new venture. The motor plays such an Important part In the busy life of today that it has come to be quite the natural thing to include special motor apparel In one's outfit as each season wheels around. This fall the new styles have extended to this department of dress also, and the ugly, shapeless garments originally designed for traveling by car have given way to smart, well-fitting costumes that serve' the purpose as well and the eye much better. Cheviots In all the close firm weaves are given first place for the long enveloping coats now, and those In the herring-bone design In monotone or two-tone effects have the preference of these. In the new models the exaggerated width which was a characteristic feat ure of the original automobile coat has been eliminated by means or a curved seam under the arm In place of the straight or nearly straight one. Fre quently an lnturned box pleat Is in serted in this seam and then strapped across; or pockets are inserted at this point Pockets are, if not an indispen sable adjunct, a great convenience and one is added wherever there is the slightest excuse for It The cape hood, which is developed In a number of ways, is not only ornamental but useful in case of Cold and storm. The cape, which shapes In to the shoulders smoothly and fastens to the front of-the coat with a single button. Is always smart and about as convenient as any design. As for sleeves, the . latest are very full at the shoulder, and while they taper toward I VJ.V" la il' i sk m nr - I 1 . a I k 11 THRIFTY WOMEN throng our allies on Thursday.
