In the screeds of tho old astrologers und schoolmen It la jiluced hltih ubove even tho wonderful Reven us the prime promoter of (food luck und em blem of fortune. It Ii. only In modern times, however, that women huve discovered that It takes nine, distinct points to niako u beauty. The first of these Is bauty of face. ReKular features are given to but few. The woman does not live, however, who cannot attain a clear complexion, pretty hair, at leust passable features, good teeth, and bright eyes shaded by long lashes and accentuated by beuutlful eye brows. Defects of the complexion may be di vided Into two classes. The first are those due to the effects of the elements upon too delicate skin; the second, those for which improper living or Imperfect care of the complexion lt eelf are responsihle. In the first class belong freckles and Biinburn. Fortunately these are usually easy to remedy. It Is best to depend, as far as possi ble, on natural cures. For freckles the. best thing to use Is lemon Juice, and plenty of It. Cut the lemon in half and rub one of the halves well over the part affected, letting It dry on the sklu. A few months of this treatment will cure ordinary freckles. The obstinate and seemingly hereditary variety require stronser treatment. For them some such remedy as the following Is excellent: Oxide of line Mr dram Buhlodide of bismuth ' drum Dextrin 1 drums Glycerine l' drains Bpread the past mn tho freckles at night before koIiij; t.) boil. In tho morn ing remove what remains with a llttlu powdered borax and sweet oil. Buttermilk Is a good cure for tan or unburn. It Is also a preventive. Used In the latter capacity It should be made Into a pasto with talcum powder and rubbed on the face before going out. To cure that obstinate variety of tan which may be gained at any time in the fall and retained all winter, the face should be as regularly washed with but termilk as if with water. The best remedy for pimples, black heads and like blemishes is to remove their cause. This may usually be found in improper eating, Improper facial washing or unhealthful living of some sort. An oily skin should be washed with cologne and water. An Inordinately dry one should be massaged nightly with cold crea.v.. Massage is also the best cure for wrinkles. CLEANLINESS ESSENTIAL Btrict cleanliness of the entire body Is i. ost important. All impurities show immediately on the face, and they are often danger sig nals of greater ills impending. Most women have naturally good hair if they do not ill-treat it. For healthy hair tho only care that is necessary is a regular and thorough combing and brushing, a good shampoo once In three or four weeks (blondes should use an egg shampoo), and singeing and clip ping: every few months. Vaseline rubbed into the roots Is best for thin, short hair, especially when it is fine and unruly. For falling hair a good tonic should be used, and massage Is tho best of invlgorators. Do not, except as a last resort, dye the hair. Never bleach It. Few women realize how very pretty white or gray hair la with a young faco and f resit col oring, and it certainly adds a dignified charm to the appearance of the elderly woman. Where the hair is turning gray for no apparent reason the following treat ment, while It will not restore its color, will often cause it to stop turning: Take 5 centa' worth of oil of winter green, adding It drop by drop to about one tablespoonful of pure lard, and beating It until It Is about the consis tency of cold cream ft 4 V A 'V i V ij -" Xiy x v"i ' ' . Good health, and that alone, will give bright eyes and rosy cheeks. The ivxt four points of beauty relate to the llglire. First ii.iiie beautiful hands and arms. Massage with cocoa-butter and abrasion with pumice Mono will cure the two commonest d foots of the arm, scrawni ncss and ruim rttoous hair. Ah for the hands, the first of all rules is absolute cleanliness. Combined with careful manicuring, no other treatment should be necessary. The skin at the base of the nails should be pushed back, never cut, and a too high polish Is not desirable. Any one can acquire a well-rounded neck and throat. Massage and deep breathing are the secrets of success. Both whistling and singing are also fhxTX 2ceA ntiA good. Massage Is, on the otftor hand, tho best thing for a double chin. Stretching exercises aro also of benefit in tills case. A good figure is largely a gift of na ture, but diet and exercise will work wonders in the development or roduction of the bust, hips and waist. Generally speaking, bending and stretching exercises, will reduce; what nro knwn as "vibratory" exercises will develop. These consist In carrying; out every -motion Intensely, as If fighting against a force which was forcing the muscles back. , , mijn1i"iJ'-"- '-fvin- - ' 4 : ' " )M t IX ii Beauty of the feet depends largely j on daily care. Stockings should al ways be rather too long than too short, and shoes should fit exactly. Care in this direction will prevent corns and bunions. For Ingrowing toenails, pack the nail with tissue paper, and force It gradually back Into the natural position. A sweet volco often compensates for lack of other beauty. American women need to articulato distinctly, and to practice tho lower register of tones. Above all, speak good English, and avoid slang and colloquialisms. Carriage and deportment are vital points. The walk should be graceful, the head should be held erect, and one should never fall Into slouchy positions In walking or standing. Avoid nervous habits, such as keeping the hands or feet always In motion.
