SHIP NEARLY LIFTED TO CLOUDS BY WATERSPOUT Schooner Andy Mahoney and Crew Have Narrow Escape y Off 3Iouth of Columbia When Pillar of Water Almost Sucks Them Out of the Sea. . i i 1 : An lmmenie column of water, reach tof from the ocean to a black cloud in the ky, chased the schooner Andy Jdahoney for 10 minute off the mouth of the Columbia river t 9 o'clock Mon ' day morning and the officers and crew feared every moment to be overtaken ' by" the roaring funnel- of water and either carried off Into apace or torn to pieces and eent tothe bottom, of the ' sea. Captain J. Joreto. master of the schooner, says the waterspout as the largest he baa ever seen or heard of end he has sailed the oceans for tunny years. . " - - The Andv Mahoney arrived In the har- , ,W last night and went to the mill of the Portland Lumber company to load lumber for San Pedro. Having sailed in over the bar and picked up a tow boat for this city without going ashore at Astoria, Captain Jorgeneon gave the tlrst personal account of the remarkable experience this morning while entering his vessel at the custom house. Offloers Stunned h-r T.lo-htTiino- TPe left San Francisco in ballast for Portland about three weeks ago and arrived off Tillamook rock laat Bun day night ' It wag sultry and Bhory after dusk vivid f lashes , of lightning began to play across the heavens. We did not anticipate much of a storm, but Irra H 1 1 1 1 ir It ....... .j i . ' ... .i uNcmu in iury until about midnight the climax was reached when a bolt of lightning struck in the schooner's wake within a few fcot of the stern. ''Mate Norllng and the man at the wueei were stunena ana temporarily blinded, and it was some time before they recovered from the terrific shock. They tell me the electric bolt made an awful fuss as it struck the water, and the light was so intense everything turned: Into one Immense flash. "The lightning continued until well along toward dawn, when It gradually faded away in the distance. It rained copiously, but the wind was not extraor dinarily strong. We were making fine time, however, running before it, steer ing on a northerly course beyond fo me coiumoia river lightship. Waterspout Follows Boa. "When about two miles tto the south ward of the lightship our attention was attracted by a strange rumbling sound. Looking about, we saw a gigantic pil lar of water come speeding along from the westward. Funnel-shaDed. It ta pered from an inky cloud in the sky to me ocean, us Dnse appearing to be at least 100 feet in circumference. The water was white with foam and for a distance of several hundred feet the ocean appeared to be one Immense wniripool. "The rumbling sound Increased as the spout drew nearer, until it sounded like a million breakers beating upon a sandy beach. We were steering north, and thought thereby to escape the spout, but it nearly took the breath away from us when we saw the spout change its course and come directly for us. All hands were summoned on deck with firearms ready to fire away at the col umn as eon as within rnni that hplnr the only wav of 'bursting a tpmnmit and the Intention was then to rush fori the hold as quickly as possible and await developments, and possibly our doom. "The spout was within 50 feet of the schooner, I should Judge, when the sec ond mate fired his revolver at It The pillar broke and drew up into the cloud and swept on above us. Had It held a few moments longer it would have swallowed up the schooner and either carried her Into the sky or swamped and sunk her. There Is no getting away from a water spout and we thanked our good luck for-escaplng what appeared to us certain destruction. "We were within sight of the mouth of the Columbia by this time and did not take time to wait for pilot nor tug but sailed right in against a strong ebb tide. Tha weather wah 'rifrtv nntatrio and In view of ourexperlences we did not care particularly to spend another night outside. We sailed In over the bar so fast that the lookout at North Head failed to see us and the pilots at Astoria were surprised when thev jearnea mat we naa aroppea anchor in tile viJty ueu.1 luc U1UCH can Duoy. The ebb tide, was so strong, however. that several times we had "to get into the wind and take a straight shoot across the channel and thus gain a sort or rresn neaaway to carry us on. Prior to running Into the thunder storm the schooner encountered some heavy weather and lost her Jib boom. The thunder storm that nearly put the Andy Mahoney's mate and quartermaster out of commission was noticed Sunday night when it Pained heavily, and also Monday morning, when a fifth ef an inch of rain fell In the short snare of flvp minutes, according In tha nunrrl nf ih local weather bureau. This point Is important be cause the Ohio supreme court's order of 1892 demanded the trust's dissolution, and Kellogg tried to show that the trust was being conducted in open defiance of this order.
