That Clar enca Johnaon, a Yakima Indian, who was killed Friday by the Clearwater train near th Spalding bridge, 'deliber ately sought the railroad traoka for th purpose of ending hla life la the verdict returned yesterday afternoon by Coro ner Vaaaar and Sheriff Harry Lydon. The information was gleaned from Indians and from G. C. Knapp, the lat ter testifying that on two occasions Friday ha pulled the Indian from the tracks and that Johnaon then told him he would throw himself under the train and be klljed. The last time Knapp se cured two Indians and placed them on guard over Johnson, but they becsme tired of this duty and left him alone but a short dlstanc from th spot where he was killed. The suicide of an Indian la a very rare occurrence on any of the western reservations and the oldest pioneers state that they cannot remember that a i ex ferce nas ever taken bis own life. The Norwegian steamer Admiral Bor- reson, which arrived here Saturday night from San Francisco under charter to load lumber for China is said to be capable of reeling off It knots an hour, and if this Is so she will easily beat the British steamer Kalomo, which claims the distinction of being th fast est tramp steamer afloat. The man who shot at Southern Pacific Paasenver Conductor Jeff Gage of Oakland, near Tracy yesterday afternoon and who waa killed during the pistol duel that fol lowed, Is still unidentified.
